Wyndham Garden Newark Airport
550 Route 1 South

About three miles from Newark Airport, the 349-room Wyndham Garden Hotel Newark Airport is an average sleep-and-fly kind of place with a few nice amenities. Updated in 2015, the rooms and lobby look refreshed, but still feature chain-like decor with little personality. There are a seasonal outdoor pool, a small gym, a business center, and an on-site convenience store. The mid-range hotel offers a free 24-hour shuttle to Newark Airport. For those looking for something a little more filling than muffins and yogurt, the on-site Starlight Restaurant and Lounge serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but the food is mediocre at best. Check rates at the comparable Ramada Plaza Newark Liberty International Airport, with many of the same features plus Keurig coffeemakers in the rooms.

Howard Johnson Hotel by Wyndham Newark Airport
20 Frontage Rd

Located on the periphery of Newark Liberty International Airport, the Howard Johnson Hotel - Newark Airport is a 171-room budget hotel ideal for travelers who need a cheap place to crash. While it’s debatable whether or not staying in the Howard Johnson’s dark, well worn rooms is more comfortable than sleeping on the airport floor, the HoJo does have free Wi-Fi, a nicely equipped fitness center, and a small cafe with reasonably good food. The free, frequently running shuttle to and from the airport is a nice perk, but it’s also offered by nearby hotels, like the Ramada Plaza Newark Liberty International Airport and the Holiday Inn Newark Airport, which are nicer, cleaner, and usually double the price.

Best Western Plus Newark Airport West
101 International Way

For travelers who need a comfortable bed for the night before departing or after arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport, Newark Penn Station, or the Bayonne cruise terminal, this budget chain hotel could do the trick. Generic, but spacious, rooms aren't as stylish as the contemporary lobby. The hotel is located in an unappealing area with no services and distraught views of a trucking yard and an off-site parking lot, but the lobby is bright and modern, and the free breakfast offers a selection of hot and cold items to tide guests over until they board their planes, trains, or ships.

Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Newark International Airport
160A Frontage Road

The Ramada Plaza Newark Liberty International Airport is located right next to Newark Airport, and the hotel provides a free, frequent shuttle to and from the airport. The rooms are spacious with modern decor and basic amenities, including a Keurig coffeemaker. The Ramada has a variety of meeting and event spaces that can accommodate small groups and large events. The hotel, however, is situated on a small, gritty street off  the highway and the location offers very little public transit options into New York City.

Holiday Inn Newark Airport
450 Rt. 1 & 9 South

This busy, 191-room mid-range hotel tailors to mostly to business travelers, as well as short-term guests from the nearby Newark International Airport. It features standard chain hotel decor and amenities, including contemporary rooms, an ample fitness center, and a breakfast buffet (for an extra charge) -- but there are a few thoughtful extras that cater to the clientele, including a boarding-pass printing area and laptop-to-TV hookups in the rooms.

Hampton Inn Newark-Airport
1128 Spring St

While the budget, 151-room Hampton Inn Newark-Airport may be physically tricky to get to -- its hard to access without a car -- the inside makes for a comfortable stay. The lobby is accented with stark white couches, black and white portraits, colorful glass lamps and plant centerpieces, while the bedrooms are a bit boring but do have microwaves and coffeemakers. As its name implies, there's easy access to Newark Liberty International Airport (three miles away) via a free shuttle. Other freebies include daily breakfast, 24 hour business and fitness facilities, Wi-Fi, and on-site parking. Jersey Gardens Outlet Mall, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and Newark Symphony Hall are a few miles away, but getting to New York City is less than convenient from the hotel.

Murray Hill Inn
535 Central Avenue New Providence

More hostel than hotel -- some of its 50 rooms have shared bathrooms -- the Murray Hill Inn is cheap for a reason: small, dated guest rooms; no gym; no breakfast; $7 per day fee for Wi-Fi. Its quiet location near great restaurants in Murray Hill is a plus, but nearby hotels -- like the Ramada Inn and La Quinta -- offer more.

New York Budget Inn
427 Allen Street Elizabeth

This hostel in Murray Hill is a great option for visitors traveling to NYC on a budget, with shared rooms starting at just $50 per night, and private rooms for just a bit more. Many of the rooms are small, but clean -- there is daily housekeeping -- and efficient. As in other hostels, many rooms also share bathrooms in the hallway. There is no curfew or lockout, as the hostel is staffed 24/7, and in-room microwaves and mini-fridges help guests save on food (though there is no shared kitchen, unlike at some competitors). Additional conveniences such as free Wi-Fi and free pizza two nights a week are major draws, especially for cash-strapped travelers. Overall, this is one of the best hostels in New York, but it's also worth considering Hostelling International.
