The Red Palm Villas
Santa Teresa Main Road

The Red Palm Villas is a three-and-a-half pearl oceanfront resort on a fabulous Santa Teresa surf beach. It’s five air-conditioned villas and suites are rustically luxe with live-edged furniture, hardwood accents and built-ins, mosaic-tiled bathrooms, king-size beds, and plush futons. Two of the villas have ocean views, while the others have garden views. It’s a quiet and private property with villas spaced out throughout the sandy grounds. Red Palm can arrange surf lessons, yoga classes, tours, and also has free boogie boards to borrow -- but there's no pool or restaurant. For a luxurious eco-chic stay with a gorgeous pool, delicious (but expensive) restaurant, and an open-air spa, it’s worth pricing out the nearby Latitude 10 Resort

Ylang Ylang Beach Resort
Montezuma Beach, 10-12 minute walk North along the beach

Off-the-beaten-track and oozing Tican charm, this 22-room hotel is situated at the end of a scenic beach, within walking distance of Montezuma -- an area popular with surfers and dreadlocked expats. The property stretches across a lush rainforest nature preserve, where monkeys and exotic birds are common (so carry a camera at all times). Add in healthy breakfasts and dinners (both meals are included in the rates), and there isn't another place in Nicoya Peninsula like it. Simple accommodations include cozy Tent Cabins (without A/C) and romantic bungalows (with A/C) -- all come with empty mini-fridges. Guests also have use of an outdoor pool, spa, water sports, and an open-air yoga studio facing the sea. Free Wi-Fi and transfers to town are provided.

Villa Mango Moon
100 Meters Past La Mariposa Hotel

The three-pearl Mango Moon Villa blends design elements of tropical residential villas and traditional Costa Rican inns. The intimate, garden-style pool area (with Biesanz Bay views) and eclectic, open-air restaurant lounge center the hotel with a distinctly adult-centric vibe.  Each of the 12 rooms is individually decorated. All feature TVs, air-conditioning, free (though spotty) Wi-Fi, and balconies with optional water views. The property is unabashedly rough around the edges (some would call it charming), and insects and noisy wildlife can also be an issue. For less money, the adult-only Hotel Vela Bar offers more modern amenities within walking distance of Playa Espadilla.

Ocho Artisan Bungalows
300 Meters South From Super 2001, Playa Tamarindo

The three-pearl Ocho Artisan Bungalows is a gorgeous hotel with eight unique bungalows on the beach in Tamarindo. Beautiful bungalows feature tented fabric ceilings with local wood finishes, and they're equipped with kitchenettes and large outdoor patios. Ocho’s small pool is surrounded by cushioned daybeds, and the hotel has a handful of surfboards for guests to take to the beach. There’s a tiny lobby bar, but no on-site restaurant or breakfast service, although guests can easily walk to the shops and restaurants in Tamarindo. Travelers looking for a hotel with more amenities might prefer Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas, though it isn’t on the beach or within walking distance of downtown.

Quinta Esencia B&B
Playa Brasilito, 400 mts Flamingo road

Quinta Esencia B&B is a quaint two-and-a-half-pearl hotel located a short walk from Playa Brasilito beach. The bed-and-breakfast’s four guest rooms are delightful and down-to-earth, decorated with eye-catching colors and charming curios. The tiny property’s amenities include a small hot tub and a comfy, thatched-roof common area where guests can help themselves to free coffee or use the communal microwave. Ample dining options can be found in the town of Brasilito, and there are two decent beaches located within walking distance. Travelers who prefer to stay right on the beach might also consider Sueno del Mar Beachfront Bed & Breakfast in Tamarindo, although rates tend to be pricier.

El Silencio Lodge & Spa
El Silencio Lodge

The aptly named El Silencio Lodge & Spa caters to guests seeking a secluded upscale rain forest getaway. The 16 rooms include entry-level Suites with spacious layouts, minibars, and private decks with outdoor hot tubs. Villas upgrade to house-style layouts with full kitchens, multiple bedrooms, and wide decks. A range of outdoor opportunities like waterfall rappelling, zip-lining, and hiking is available at the adventure park. The spa, free hot breakfast, and free valet parking are nice upscale perks. However, with just one restaurant and a remote location, some guests may find the on-site amenities too limited once the sun sets. Note that kids under the age of eight aren't allowed here. Although it's less sophisticated, Xandari Resort & Spa offers many of the same amenities for less money.

Hotel & Villas Huetares
Calle Principal

Hotel & Villas Huetares is a 41-room value property patronized mostly by Costa Rican guests. Rooms have bland, dated furniture and decor, but villas have full kitchens and small dining areas. There are two large pools and a playground for kids, but there are few other amenities besides free parking and Wi-Fi. Although there’s no on-site restaurant, breakfast is included in the room rate and is served buffet style at the restaurant next door. While there’s not much to do in the immediate area, the hotel is just a two-minute walk from the incredibly beautiful Playa Hermosa. Even though Hotel & Villas Huetares has larger rooms and more pools, we prefer the more intimate, family-run Hotel ManGaby just across the street, which has a full-service restaurant.

Tamarindo Hostel Resort
Tamarindo Beach, In Plaza Conchal, Next to Bac San Jose, Tamarindo Downtown

Tamarindo Hostel Resort is a practical, two-pearl property located in the heart of Tamarindo. The hostel’s 16 dorms and private rooms are no-frills but tidy, with all offering AC. There’s an inviting upstairs common area with dining tables and hammocks, plus a sizable shared kitchen -- but no pool. The hostel’s atmosphere is relaxed and social, and there are tons of bars and restaurants in the neighborhood for guests looking to party. Budget travelers searching for a property with direct beach access could consider Hotel La Laguna del cocodrilo, though it also lacks a pool.

Guanacaste Lodge
200 S Cruse Of Potrero

The Guanacaste Lodge is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel located in Playa Flamingo. The hotel’s 10 guest rooms are basic but well-maintained. There are two beaches and numerous restaurants within walking distance, plus an attractive on-site pool set within green grounds. Add in a free Costa Rican-style breakfast, and the Guanacaste Lodge is easily one of the best bargains in Playa Flamingo. Travelers looking for direct beach access could consider El Sabanero Beach Hotel, which has slightly more stylish rooms for slightly higher rates.

Hotel RipJack Inn
100m south of oficna de Minae

Hotel RipJack Inn is a three-pearl hotel located a short walk from striking Playa Grande beach. The hotel’s 21 guest rooms are tidy and charming, and some have separate living areas and kitchenettes. The hotel’s small, green grounds offer two fine outdoor pools, an excellent restaurant, and a serene yoga shala. There are a few other dining options within walking distance, with this quiet town mainly appealing to guests interested in surfing or watching turtle nesting on the beach. Travelers may want to compare amenities and rates with nearby Hotel Cantarana.
