Wyndham Santa Monica at the Pier
120 Colorado Ave

This upper-middle-range Wyndham is ideally located for family-friendly activities at the Santa Monica Pier. Guests can walk to the Pier, the beach, numerous shopping spots, and a variety of eateries, and reach Venice Beach in about 15 minutes by bike. The modern lobby is looking fresh following a 2014-2015 renovation, and it has a new open-concept restaurant and bar. The 132 rooms also look fresh, and the heated outdoor pool is a plus. Because its location is so convenient, however, the hotel is a bit pricey, as is its valet parking. Another nearby option is the Ocean View Hotel, which is significantly less expensive, as it's located across the street from the beach.

Omni San Francisco Hotel

This upscale, medium-sized hotel, part of the Omni chain, is a stylish, comfortable option for well-heeled tourists and business travelers. The luxury comes at a high price, however, and better rates can generally be found at other, nearby four-pearl properties, such as the Hilton or Le Meridien, though some may prefer the Omni's more traditional style and touches of grandeur.

La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Carlsbad - Legoland Area
760 Macadamia Dr

The 110-room La Quinta Inn & Suites San Diego Carlsbad is a budget hotel conveniently located just off Interstate 5, about a 10-minute drive from Legoland and a 15-minute walk from South Carlsbad State Beach. Rooms are basic but clean and come with flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. The free breakfast buffet consists of hot and cold selections, including a make-your-own waffle station. The outdoor pool is small, but it's refreshing on a hot day, and there's an adjacent patio that's a popular hangout spot. There's also a small fitness center and business center. Non-fussy travelers who'd like to save a few more dollars but stay in the same area could check out the Econo Lodge Inn & Suites Near Legoland, a barebones motel-style property.

Super 8 by Wyndham Salinas
131 Kern St

Guests of the Super 8 Salinas say that this budget hotel is surprisingly clean, modern, and well-maintained. The 70-room property sits right against Highway US 101, making it very convenient for travelers, but less convenient for light sleepers who can hear the traffic from their rooms. Guest rooms are functional and modern with comfortable beds, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and microwaves. A standard continental breakfast comes free with a stay, and the hotel has an outdoor pool, which is nice except that it faces a busy road and a Motel 6. For another budget hotel two and a half miles up the road, and just slightly farther from the highway, try the Laurel Inn and Conference Center.

InterContinental Los Angeles Century City
2151 Avenue of the Stars Century City Los Angeles

This 364-room upscale hotel is in Century City, a commercial center for LA's TV and movie industry. Next door to Fox Studios and a few blocks from Beverly Hills shopping, its Avenue of the Stars location is also convenient to Hollywood, UCLA, and Santa Monica, but far from the city's most popular attractions. The hotel has big rooms (starting at 425 square feet) with balconies and great views, free car service, an outdoor infinity pool and whirlpool, and 24-hour room service. Service is a highlight here, from the concierge to the pool staff and drivers. But hotel and room decor is on the bland side, and the fee for in-room Wi-Fi feels chintzy at this price point. For more style and a similar menu of features and services, travelers could consider the Sofitel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills.

Courtyard by Marriott San Francisco Downtown

It's not quite as fashionable as its competitors in SoMa, near the Moscone Convention Center and the downtown musuems, but the 374-room Courtyard by Marriott San Francisco Downtown was renovated in 2009 and its indoor pool and larger-than-average guest rooms make it an attractive choice for the price.

Kimpton Hotel Palomar San Diego

Located in the lively Gaslamp Quarter, Kimpton Hotel Palomar San Diego is a hip luxury property with unique design touches and a young vibe. Surrounding streets are filled with bars and restaurants, while the waterfront is about a 20-minute walk. The on-site eatery earns raves from guests for its creative American fare and cocktails, and the fourth-floor pool has a relaxing deck and seasonal bar. The 211 rooms and suites are massive and modern, with luxe touches like Italian linens and rainforest showers with Jerusalem stone. Many options also feature incredible views of the city skyline. Other features include a fitness center and a full-service spa with a couples soaking tub. There are fees for Wi-Fi and breakfast, though. The US Grant -- a Luxury Collection Hotel has a more classic elegant feel, but higher rates.

InterContinental The Clement Monterey
750 Cannery Row

The 208-room InterContinental The Clement Monterey is a luxury hotel right on Monterey Bay and Cannery Row with exceptional ocean views throughout the property. Contemporary rooms offer marble bathrooms with soaking tubs, and some rooms have gas fireplaces or balconies overlooking the waterfront. The lovely outdoor pool and accompanying hot tub both have beautiful fountain features, and guests can indulge in massages or body treatments in the full-service spa. The C Restaurant + Bar receives good reviews, but prices can be high, and Wi-Fi as well as all parking options (self, garage, valet) incur fees. Travelers could compare rates and amenities with the neighboring upscale Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa.

Hilton San Diego Resort & Spa

The 357-room Hilton San Diego Resort & Hotel opened in 1962 and enjoys a central, Mission Bay-front location close to San Diego’s most popular attractions. It offers a top-notch spa, a beach with numerous watersports options, large pool, multiple dining options, and organized children’s activities. However, the resort is a bit isolated with no restaurants within walking distance. Rooms are contemporary and come with luxury beds and bedding, coffeemakers, and turndown service. It’s competitively priced but so are other similar resort properties that are closer to Mission Beach and within walking distance of restaurants, such as the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa.

Residence Inn by Marriott Los Angeles LAX
5933 W. Century Blvd

The mid-range Residence Inn Los Angeles LAX/Century Boulevard is a bright, modern airport hotel that opened in 2015. It’s chock full of attractive amenities, such as a free 24/7 airport shuttle, a hot breakfast included in the rates, a heated outdoor pool, fitness center, guest laundry, and three attached restaurants, including a Starbucks. The hotel’s residential-style suites are spacious and include full kitchens, sleeper sofas, and bathrooms with walk-in showers. The hotel also offers a grocery-shopping service to guests. On-site parking is available, but it's expensive. While room rates are competitive, better deals can be found in the LAX area, including at the Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles, which has comparable amenities and two fine-dining restaurants.
