The Gregory Hotel New York
42 West 35th Street Manhattan New York

The biggest selling point of The Gregory is its walkable location in the heart of West Manhattan, within a few minutes' stroll from Macy's and the Empire State Building. That said, the 132 rooms at this upper-middle-range property aren't bad either, with elegant but simple decor relying heavily on monochrome color tones. All come with flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges. Rooms lack coffee- and tea-making facilities, but there is free tea and coffee in the lobby every morning. There's also a small fitness center, a guest computer with a printer, and a restaurant with a good cocktail menu where guests can pick up breakfast for a fee. However, there are other options in the area that come with more perks, such as the Best Western Premier Herald Square, where breakfast is free and the rooms have coffeemakers

Hudson New York
Hudson

Opened in 2000, the lively upscale Hudson Hotel is a hip boutique property in Midtown Manhattan, a four-minute walk to Central Park. While the property underwent extensive renovations to achieve its cool current vibe, it embraces several elements from the original 1929 construction to retain an industrial-chic air, including exposed brick and ductwork. Snug rooms are outfitted with retro-chic decor selected by French designer Philippe Starck, and include high-end amenities. The hotel serves as the flagship location of the cool Umami Burger franchise, and the Library Bar offers a cozy setting for billiards and handcrafted cocktails. Seasonal outdoor spaces include a charming garden area and a 15th-floor rooftop terrace with panoramic city views. There’s a modern gym in the basement, though there’s no pool or spa. The nearby Dream Midtown is a similar alternative, with a two-story rooftop bar and an Italian restaurant -- but doesn't have a pesky urban resort fee.

Murray Hill Inn
535 Central Avenue New Providence

More hostel than hotel -- some of its 50 rooms have shared bathrooms -- the Murray Hill Inn is cheap for a reason: small, dated guest rooms; no gym; no breakfast; $7 per day fee for Wi-Fi. Its quiet location near great restaurants in Murray Hill is a plus, but nearby hotels -- like the Ramada Inn and La Quinta -- offer more.

New York Budget Inn
427 Allen Street Elizabeth

This hostel in Murray Hill is a great option for visitors traveling to NYC on a budget, with shared rooms starting at just $50 per night, and private rooms for just a bit more. Many of the rooms are small, but clean -- there is daily housekeeping -- and efficient. As in other hostels, many rooms also share bathrooms in the hallway. There is no curfew or lockout, as the hostel is staffed 24/7, and in-room microwaves and mini-fridges help guests save on food (though there is no shared kitchen, unlike at some competitors). Additional conveniences such as free Wi-Fi and free pizza two nights a week are major draws, especially for cash-strapped travelers. Overall, this is one of the best hostels in New York, but it's also worth considering Hostelling International.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Charlotte
230 North College Street Charlotte center city Charlotte

The Doubletree by Hilton Hotel right next to Johnson and Wales University in Uptown Charlotte has a convenient location and updated rooms with large flat-screen TVs and fun, modern decor (think chocolate brown mixed with lime green and slate blue). Standard rooms lack mini-fridges and microwaves, and the bathroom vanities are oddly blocked by the toilets. However, with a modern fitness center and an outdoor saltwater pool, the hotel is a good value (though extras like Wi-Fi and parking require an additional fee).

Waikiki Beachside Hostel
2556 Lemon Road Waikiki Honolulu

This value hostel is located in the popular tourist area of Waikiki, surrounded by shops and restaurants, and just a one-minute walk from the beach. Typical of hostels, rooms (both private and dorm-style) are basic and have few furnishings, but are clean with comfy beds. Perks include a 24/7 staffed reception, free breakfast, free use of water sports equipment, and free Wi-Fi.

Le Richelieu in the French Quarter
1234 Chartres Street French Quarter New Orleans

Authentic and funky, this historic boutique -- located in a residential area on the French Quarter's far edge -- allows guests to experience the neighborhood as the locals do. It's also an easy walk to Frenchman Street, an exciting area in the Marigny experiencing a renaissance in live music and tapas-oriented restaurants. But while the old-world decor is charming enough in the lobby, it's less impressive in the slightly worn rooms, and bathrooms are in dire need of renovation.

Royal St Charles Hotel
135 Saint Charles Avenue Central Business District New Orleans 2505

The 143-room Royal St. Charles is a colorful mid-range hotel in the Central Business District, near the French Quarter. Despite its bright, borderline over-the-top styling, its offerings are fairly typical for a hotel of its category. The smallest rooms may feel a little cramped, but pricier rooms offer more space. Other features include a 24-hour fitness center, a coffee shop with some light fare in the lobby, and three meeting rooms. Note that there is a mandatory resort fee, but it covers Wi-Fi access. Rates are among the lowest in the area for this caliber of property, but the nearby International House Hotel has much nicer rooms for only slightly more, while the pricier Country Inn & Suites has a small pool.

French Quarter Suites Hotel
1101 North Rampart Street Tremé / Lafitte New Orleans

The 34-room French Quarter Suites Hotel is a simple, affordable budget hotel not far from the French Quarter of New Orleans. The rooms are plain, and range from cramped studio rooms to expansive suites, including the Four-Bedroom Party Pads. It's location is great, near the bustling French Quarter, but not right in it, so there's less nightlife noise -- though exterior hallways can result in some noise from neighboring guests. The hotel provides free continental breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and has a small pool to itself, as well as a larger pool shared with neighboring properties.

The Whitney Hotel
170 Charles Street Beacon Hill Boston

Set in a historic 1890s bank building on busy Poydras Street in the Central Business District, The Whitney Hotel is a lower-middle-range property with original architectural features, 93 warm rooms, and limited amenities. Rooms offer air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and free water, but no mini-fridges or minibars. Suites add comfortable living areas. Breakfast is offered in the beautiful former bank lobby, but there’s no full-service restaurant. Other amenities include a fitness center, a small business center, a lobby lounge, and valet parking (for a fee). Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, and free coffee and water are offered in the lobby. As an alternative, the nearby historic St. James Hotel, an Ascend Hotel Collection Member offers a small pool and on-site dining, but there’s no fitness center.
