Hilton Times Square

This 460-room Hilton in touristy Times Square was built in 2000 and renovated in 2013, so it feels modern and fresh. Standard rooms are some of the biggest in the area at 330 square feet, and since the hotel begins on the building's 21st floor, views from most of the rooms, the lobby, and the fitness center are all exceptional. If Times Square is where you need to be in NYC, then the Hilton offers a nice respite from the hectic neighborhood many floors below. It's one of the best four-pearl values in this popular neighborhood, though families may want to consider the two-room suites at the nearby DoubleTree Suites by Hilton.

Kimpton Muse Hotel

The Muse - Kimpton is a trendy, upscale hotel with 200 rooms and suites, located just half a block from Times Square in Midtown Manhattan. Rooms are spacious for New York City, and have pop art decor with splashes of hot pink; some feature balconies with city views. Amenities include free evening wine receptions (a Kimpton trademark), a 24-hour fitness center, five meeting rooms, and a restaurant -- NICOS -- offering European fare. There's no spa, but in-room massages can be arranged. Overall, this is a nice boutique alternative to the many mega-hotels in the neighborhood; the Sanctuary Hotel is another stylish boutique nearby, but its rooms are smaller.

Millennium Premier New York Times Square

This upscale annex of the massive and generic Millennium Broadway hotel next door offers 125 large, quiet, and clean rooms and proximity to Times Square -- but not much else. The Premier provides value with a free breakfast buffet and evening happy hour, but its gym is actually next door, on the 16th floor of the Millennium, though it is open 24 hours a day. All things considered, the Premier's prices are too high for what you get. For a Times Square four-pearler with chicer rooms, look into Row NYC.

DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel New York City - Times Square
350 West 40th Street Manhattan New York

The DoubleTree Suites may be one of the best hotel options for families in New York City. The big two-room suites all come with pull-out couches and either one king or two double beds; the latter can fit up to six people, a rarity in the area. And the location right on Times Square is as central as it gets for sightseeing. It's a big corporate hotel with trendy lobby decor and clean, generic rooms; features include a cool back-lit lobby bar, a modern fitness center, and extensive meeting space. Some rooms have excellent views of Times Square, others face the New York City skyline (with peeks of Central Park in the distance). Higher floors are quieter and have better views.

Hampton Inn Manhattan / Times Square Central

Opened in 2015, the mid-range Hampton Inn Manhattan/Times Square Central has all the amenities associated with the Hampton brand: a hot breakfast included in the rates, a spacious fitness center, and a well-equipped business center. Its 300 rooms might be slightly smaller than at other Hampton Inns, but they're in line with New York City standards. Like the public spaces of the hotel, the rooms are bright and modern, with spiffy bathrooms. Rates are competitive, given the hotel's prime location, but travelers who can live without a fitness center will find more stylish rooms  -- and lower prices -- at the Hotel Shocard at Times Square.

AKA Times Square

Amidst sleek high rises on a nice block of 44th Street is this standout late Romanesque revival façade dating back to 1893 -- but this is where “old” ends. The fourth-generation Philly-based real estate group, Korman Communities, completely refurbished the interiors of this building to hold 106 contemporary apartment-style units. The only thing that remains from days past are the original window sizes, which for some studio, one- and two-bedroom units means less light -- and for lower floors, more street noise. Otherwise, guests can rely on clean and modern furnishings in the spacious living areas, the stainless steel kitchens, and luxe Bulgari toiletries in the bathrooms. Many guests are international travelers, and some are in corporate or transition mode, staying for a month or more, which helps lower their prices. A friendly but lean staff keeps things spic and span, and there's a two-floor lounge, bar, and rooftop terrace that are just begging to be used. The location is a few blocks from Bryant Park, grocery stores, restaurants, cafes and numerous Subway stations. Downsides include a fee for daily housekeeping and a lack of an on-site restaurant.

Hilton Garden Inn New York - Times Square Central

Opened in 2014, the Hilton Garden Inn is a mid-range, 282-room chain hotel with spiffy modern decor and dead-on views of Times Square from the public spaces and some of the rooms. Tourists and business travelers (especially those with Hilton Honors points) are attracted to the hotel for its location and budget-friendly rates. Rooms are on the small size with somewhat bland decor but they are brightened by floor-to-ceiling windows that let in the light and the city views.

Hilton Garden Inn Times Square
136 West 42nd Street Manhattan New York

The 369-room Hilton Garden Inn Times Square is one of the most up-to-date mid-range options in Midtown West, a neighborhood popular among tourists and business travelers due to its proximity to numerous sights, offices, and subway lines. Rooms are spacious -- particularly by New York standards -- and feature nice amenities such as big flat-screen TVs with free HBO, mini-fridges, microwaves, large work desks, and free Wi-Fi. Street-facing rooms can experience some noise, and on-site features aren’t particularly extensive, but this sleek property offers a solid value.

Pod Times Square

The two-and-a-half-pearl Pod Times Square is a huge, budget-friendly hotel that's marketed to travelers who don't mind staying in tiny spaces to save money. However, it's a far cry from the capsule hotels associated with urban Japan, and while the 665 rooms here certainly are Lilliputian, they are big enough to walk around in and all come with en-suite bathrooms with rainfall showers. The amenities here aren't half bad either, with an on-site tiki bar, The Polynesian, offering all sorts of snacks and cocktails, plus a small fitness center, an outdoor deck (that's sometimes locked), free Wi-Fi, and coin-operated laundry facilities. Travelers shopping around may want to also consider the YOTEL New York, located two blocks away. Still another, slightly funkier alternative to Pod Times Square is Pod 39, a sister property near Grand Central.

Row NYC Hotel

This massive, modern magnet for tourists, located a block from Times Square, was rebranded as Row NYC in 2014 after a full renovation. With 1,331 rooms, this upper-middle-range property can feel crowded -- check-in lines are the norm -- but on-site features add distinctly local flavor and cater to sightseers on-the-go. Rooms have fresh, contemporary style, though overall they’re rather straightforward and could use a more thorough scrubbing. Between the gourmet food court and the cafe-by-day/lounge bar-by-night, treats from some of NYC’s most-hyped food brands are on offer in smartly decorated spaces. Past guests rave about the location -- a central-as-it-gets base from which to explore the city. Those looking for a similar location at a less mammoth property could try the nearby Cambria Hotel & Suites Times Square
