Natai Beach Resort & Spa, Phang-nga
55 Moo 6, Natai Beach

Overlooking the Andaman Sea, Maikhao Dream Resort & Spa is an upscale property with a range of tastefully decorated rooms, suites, and beach houses. While at a first glance the rooms appear elegant and modern, upon closer inspection, there are some evident wear and occasional maintenance issues. The two on-site dining options offer Thai and western dishes, plus there are a stunning pool with a swim-up bar, stylish lounge bar, and beach bar. A swish spa offers a range of treatments, and the small gym features weights and cardio equipment. Families looking for a luxury property at a similar price should consider Robinson Club Khao Lak, which has ample facilities.

Banburee Resort & Spa
102/8 Moo 3, Laem Set Road, Namuang, Ko Samui, Suratthani

Banburee Resort & Spa is an upper-middle-range hotel and wellness retreat set along a tranquil (but not swimmable) white-sand beach on the sleepy southern coasts of Koh Samui. The location is idyllic and peaceful, but fairly isolated, with the nearest restaurants and nightlife located a 20-minute drive away in Lamai. The 40 room options include streamlined modern suites plus spacious one-or two-bedroom villas. Villas feature hardwood interiors, open-air bathrooms, quality modern amenities, and ocean views (some rooms). Facilities include a beachfront swimming pool and poolside bar, a multi-cuisine restaurant, a yoga shala, and a holistic wellness center and spa which offers tailored detox programs. As an alternative option in downtown Lamai, the Weekender Resort is a popular choice, with a gorgeous white-sand beach, a sprawling infinity pool, and a beachfront restaurant and bar.

ShaSa Resort & Residences, Koh Samui
116/1 Moo 2, Tambon Maret

The four-and-a-half-pearl ShaSa Resort & Residences, Koh Samui sits on a picturesque hillside overlooking the Gulf of Thailand on the island's southern end. The rocky beach here isn't noteworthy, but there are two impressive pools, along with a full spa and a contemporary Thai eatery. The condos are large and modern, featuring full kitchens and furnished balconies, but don't expect all the amenities to be included -- the resort charges for everything from beach shuttles to using the kitchen appliances. Rooms at the Sandalwood Luxury Villas farther up the eastern coast are more refined and have kitchens, and may be a better option for couples.

Veranda High Resort Chiang Mai - MGallery By Sofitel
192 Moo 2, Banpong

Opened in 2008 on the terraced slope of a quiet valley about 30 minutes northwest of Chiang Mai, Veranda High Resort Chiang Mai - MGallery By Sofitel is a luxurious and quiet property with stellar features and hillside views. Visitors way never want to leave the resort thanks to a large infinity-edge pool (though limited loungers), full-service spa with stellar treatment rooms, a kids' club, and two restaurants serving local and European fare. The 69 sophisticated, sleek rooms have outdoor spaces, bathtubs and separate showers, and free Wi-Fi, plus private plunge pools and living spaces in some. The hotel's distance from town offerings is a downside, but a free shuttle to the center is provided a few times each day. Travelers drawn to this lush area but wanting something cheaper may prefer the elegant Oasis Baan Saen Doi Spa Resort.

River Kwai Resotel
55 Moo 5, Wangkrajae Subdistrict
Hotel On Market
559 Ratchaprarop Road Khwaeng Makkasan Khet Ratchathewi

The Doubletree by Hilton features rooms outfitted in golds, reds, and greens, with dark wood accents and draped curtains. Some may find the decor somewhat dated and stuffy, but the hotel has a more luxurious feel than other chain hotels, especially in the lobby, which is bedecked with chandeliers and high archways. The basement fitness center and the quiet courtyard are nice features, and the historic downtown location is a highlight, but families may want to consider the nearby Embassy Suites, which has a pool and free Wi-Fi.

Hotel Panorama
23rd floor โรงแรมคราวน์ พลาซ่า กรุงเทพฯ ลุมพินี พาร์ค 952 Thanon Rama IV Suriyawongse Khet Bang Rak

In a city that's packed with stunning views, not every hotel delivers. However, the Panorama by Rhombus in Tsim Sha Tsui, cashes in on its panoramic promises. The 336 rooms here are modern enough, if a bit worn, but the true showstopper are the city views all around. Many rooms have direct views of Victoria Harbor and across to Hong Kong Island. Features aren't numerous, though there are two popular dining spots, including a ground-floor buffet and sky-high fine-dining venue. A modern fitness center is available (with some equipment in the Sky Garden and the rest in a street-level room). Meeting rooms and a business center are also available. If you'd prefer better features and lower rates, but don't mind sacrificing views, check out the Holiday Inn Golden Mile instead.

Tango Hotel
11 Soi Ratchaprarop 8 Khwaeng Makkasan Khet Ratchathewi

The 10-room Tango Hotel is a modern mid-range hotel located within walking distance of Vatican City and close to a metro station. The hotel opened in 2013 after a complete renovation and offers clean and contemporary duplex guest rooms with living rooms and modern comforts like air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, luxurious bathrooms, and free Wi-Fi. However, staircases that lead to the bedrooms in each unit might pose an issue for some guests. Breakfast is included in room rates, and the hotel also offers a meeting room and a dance studio. Another clean and comfortable hotel worth considering is Rome Armony Suites, located in the same area; its rates can be lower though rooms aren't as spacious.
