Deva Samui Resort & Spa

The four-pearl Deva Samui Resort is a lovely off-the-beaten path property located on quiet Plai Laem Beach between Big Buddha and Choeng Mon on Koh Samui's north shore. Those looking to escape the crowds will appreciate that the resort is only a 10- to 15-minute drive from the airport, but is set on a quiet cove with few neighbors. Spacious rooms have flat-screen TVs and can include outdoor whirlpools or direct pool access. There are three swimming pools and beach access, plus a swim-up bar, and beachside restaurant. Extra amenities include a lovely spa, cheerful kids' club, and a modern fitness center. The party scene of Chaweng and busy Bophut are a bit far, but the resort runs a free shuttle several times a day. Prices are almost unbelievably low, especially for how nice the property is.

Royal Muang Samui Villas
89 Moo 5 Choengmon Beach

The Royal Muang Samui Villas is a medium-sized resort set on beautiful Choeng Mon Beach in the north of Koh Samui, about a 10 minutes' drive from the airport and 15 minutes from Chaweng, the island's biggest party and beach town. The villas and suites here are all ultra-spacious and quite elegant, done up in Thai style with teak floors and Thai artwork and furnishings. In fact, the resort itself was built to resemble a revered Thai temple. Rooms here feature expansive terraces and large whirlpool tubs in the palatial bathrooms; some have private pools. There is a big beachfront scene here, with the Spice Zone restaurant taking up beach space, along with the swimming pool and beach umbrella setup. The resort also features a unique spa in a cave, and an award-winning traditional Italian restaurant and pizzeria. It's a popular honeymoon spot, and although it isn't cheap, prices do match the competition for the level of elegance and excellence on tap here.

FuramaXclusive Sandara Hua Hin
243 Ruamchit Road

The Unico Grand Sandara Hotel has recently been renovated and rebranded as the FuramaXclusive Sandara Hua Hin, Cha-Am Beach. It's all for the better, as the hotel now sports a boutique style, with 122 modern rooms, many of which overlook the swimming pool or have direct pool access. The resort sits right across the street from the beach and is surrounded by restaurants and bars. There are three swimming pools plus a hot tub and kids' pool. A stylish restaurant serves Thai and western cuisine, along with free breakfast, and opens to the street and beach. The FuramaXclusive is a fantastic bargain compared to other properties in the area, none of which are as hip and central.

Haven Resort
1449 Chala Samut Rd., Cha am , Petchburi

Haven Resort is a four-pearl boutique property that sits along a fairly undeveloped stretch of beach in Cha-Am. This is one of the more stylish resorts in the area, especially for guests in the few suites or villas that have access to a shallow pool adjoining the main infinity pool. The 53 rooms are contemporary and spacious, with large bathtubs, separate rainfall showers, and big balconies. The resort also has a small fitness center and spa, and a restaurant with alfresco dining and beach views -- breakfast is free. There's little to do in the immediate area, though, and aside from the twice-daily shuttle to Hua Hin, travelers will want a car. As an alternative, Mida De Sea will have equally attractive rooms at lower rates, though it's farther from Hua Hin.

Cha-Am Methavalai Hotel
220 Ruamchitr Rd

The Cha-Am Methavalai Hotel is one of Cha Am's largest and oldest hotels, but it bucks the trend by being well taken care of and renovated, and has two wings comprising of 215 total rooms plus several swimming pools, restaurants, and a small fitness center and spa. The hotel is located just across from the beach on the Cha Am beach road. It's near the fishing pier and lots of restaurants and shops as well. Rooms come in various categories, all of which feature contemporary Thai decor, stocked mini-bars, and flat-screen TVs, and include free Wi-Fi and breakfast. Each either has large balconies or direct pool access. While the hotel isn't quite as hip as nearby places like the FuramaXclusive Sandara, it is far better than other old hotels like Beach Garden or Eurasia Lagoon -- although you do pay more for the spiffy renovations. It's a good central choice, but not for those who want to avoid the crowds.

Mida De Sea Hua Hin
1349 Soi Cha-am 53 (Bo-Kia Road), Petchkasem

Mida De Sea Hua Hin is an upscale boutique resort located in a quiet area between Cha Am and Hua Hin. The 115 rooms have either sea views or pool access, and are sleek and spacious, with kitchenettes, stylish bathrooms, and modern features. The resort is cutting-edge cool on the inside, but it's location is best for those with their own transport, and despite the sea views, the property isn't on the beach. There are a sleek fitness center and sauna on site, plus a good Mediterranean restaurant, as well as a Thai and Western option. However, the stylish swimming pool is really only eye-catching and not optimal for swimming and hanging out. Mida De Sea's price tag is a bit higher than some four-pearl boutique hotels in Cha Am, and the Veranda Resort may be a better bargain for those seeking an upscale stay.

Cera Resort Chaam
856 Haadsooksamer Road

The Cera Resort Chaam is four-pearl boutique hotel with some of the best ocean views around. It's located about seven miles south of central Cha Am, and while not convenient for visiting town, it sits next to a small village full of tourist-oriented restaurants, bars, and shops. Seventy large rooms are painted white and have bespoke touches plus furnished balconies. The hotel features a bakery, coffee shop, and restaurant that serves free breakfast. There isn’t much of a real beach here, but the resort has created its own sandy area and made a Zen garden near the pool. The nearby Regent Chalet Regent Beach Cha-Am has a better beach.

Beach Garden Cha Am
949/21 Petchkasem Rd, Tambol Cha-am, Amphur Cha-am

The Beach Garden Hotel is a mid-range, 182-room property that is one of the oldest resorts in Cha Am. It's a popular spot for conferences and seminars, but it's in one of the less fashionable spots outside of central Cha Am with few restaurants, bars, or shops. Rooms are simple and clean, and some have lovely sea views, though Superior Rooms are extremely basic. Guests here will likely have the pleasant beach, swimming pool, and spa all to themselves. The hotel's Rim Talay restaurant is right on the beach, and there are pleasant flower filled grounds as well. FuramaXclusive Sandara Hua Hin, Cha-Am Beach is closer to Cha Am's services and offers a better value for guests looking for a beachfront stay.

Regent Chalet Huahin
849 / 21 Petchkasem Road, Regent Beach

The 122-room, mid-range Regent Chalet Regent Beach Cha-Am sits on a quiet beach about five miles south of Cha Am. This rustic retreat, with its wooden bungalows set amid lush gardens, makes for a quiet getaway. Bungalows are nothing fancy, but include flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and Thai decor but no Wi-Fi. There's a large swimming pool alongside a stretch of decent beach -- a seawall separates the two -- along with a kids' pool and playground. There are also two Thai restaurants -- including one on the beach -- and a small fitness center. At 30 years old, Regent Chalet Regent Beach Cha-Am has begun to show its age, and those seeking more hip and up-to-date accommodations might want to check out FuramaXclusive Sandara Hua Hin Cha-Am Beach.
