HCC Covadonga
596 Avinguda Diagonal Sarrià-Sant Gervasi Barcelona

The 101-room HCC Covadonga is a clean and simple mid-range hotel at the confluence of three distinct neighborhoods on Avinguda Diagonal, one of Barcelona’s main thoroughfares. Landmarks such as Plaza Catalunya and La Rambla can be reached quickly via taxi, though taking the metro or walking to those same sights can take around 30 minutes. Some of the hotel’s street-facing rooms have small terraces overlooking the busy avenue, but overall they look generic and dated. Furthermore, the hotel lacks any truly impressive features beyond a couple of meeting rooms and a business center. The Ayre Hotel Caspe in Barcelona’s bustling Eixample neighborhood offers better value, and has more contemporary rooms along with a fitness center.

Hotel Montecarlo Barcelona
124 La Rambla Ciutat Vella Barcelona

The five-story Hotel Montecarlo Barcelona prides itself on its simplicity, a theme that extends from its lobby to its guest rooms. It's no-frills, and that translates into few amenities for guests. There's no restaurant, no spa, no pool, and no real public spaces. The hotel offers 55 clean rooms in a location on Las Ramblas that's hard to beat, near Plaza Catalunya. It's outside the hotel that travelers will find the action; inside, the lobby and halls are quiet, in part because the hotel does not allow groups and limits the number of children on property. While the hotel is suitable for either business or leisure travelers, the location lends itself to those interested in exploring Barcelona rather than spending much time at the hotel.

Hotel Villa Emilia

The Villa Emilia is a chic boutique option close to the Passeig de Gracia and the metro. Rooms are cozy, clean, inviting, and large by Barcelona standards. Floor-to-ceiling windows actually open fully, maximizing fresh air in the room. Sleek bathrooms sport stone stall showers and some have large soaking tubs. The common areas of the hotel carry over the stylish vibe, including Zinc for great dining and the rooftop for relaxing in prime outdoor space. With free Wi-Fi and a superb central location, the 53-room Villa Emilia is a solid pick.

Ronda House Hotel

The 87-room Ronda Hotel is a simple budget property with a good El Raval location, a five-minute walk from MACBA. Guests can easily reach many restaurants, bars, and shops on foot, as well as the metro and Las Ramblas. Rooms are plain and dated, but they have air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, safes, and small balconies. Noise can be an issue from inside and outside the hotel, and some maintenance issues are common. The free breakfast buffet includes a basic spread of both hot and cold items, and there's an on-site bar. Parking is available for a fee, and Wi-Fi is free throughout. Travelers looking for a place with more style could check out the historic Hotel Meson Castilla instead, where some rooms have furnished balconies and there's a lovely patio.

Hotel Canton
Nou de Sant Francesc 40

The two-pearl Hotel Canton attracts a diverse clientele with its reasonable room rates and convenient location. The 47-room property is situated in the Gothic Quarter, close to the beach and within walking distance of Barcelona’s top attractions. Rooms are dated, but offer flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges. There's also free but reportedly spotty Wi-Fi, and breakfast is available for a small fee. Travelers may want to compare rates at El Jardi nearby, which offers free breakfast for those who book directly through the hotel.

Hotel California

The budget Hotel California offers a central Gothic Quarter location close to Las Ramblas, along with attractive rates. Its 31 rooms are clean and functional, but a bit on the small side. Some rooms have balconies, but views are rather drab, and noise from the busy streets below can be readily heard. Breakfast is included, as is free Wi-Fi and concierge services. A cozy lobby bar is available for coffee and drinks throughout the day. Overall, it’s a good choice for couples and families on a budget seeking a convenient location. For a similar hotel nearby with even lower rates, consider the budget el Jardi -- though it doesn't have a bar and breakfast isn't included in all rates.

Hotel Rialto

Visitors to Barcelona looking for basic accommodations in the thick of the action may want to consider Rialto. Located in the Gothic Quarter and near Las Ramblas and transportation hubs, there's no shortage of shops, bars, and restaurants nearby this three-pearl hotel. All that activity, however, means that noise from outside is particularly loud in the rooms that face the street. The 205 rooms are simple and clean, but not designed for spending a lot of time: Decor is basic and amenities are few. The Rialto is a good choice for leisure travelers, as evidenced by the lack of business facilities and fee for Wi-Fi. There's a wide variety of options at the hotel breakfast, and the hotel also has a bar and restaurant.

Hotel Oasis

While the budget-friendly Hotel Oasis, like many hotels at the same price point, doesn't offer much in the way of extras, it does live up to its name, providing a generally quiet place to stay near many of Barcelona's top attractions in the Ciutat Vella. Rooms are small but modern, and provide all the basics: comfortable beds, air-conditioning, hair dryers, and shampoo, along with flat-screen TVs. Given the hotel's location on Pla de Palau Square -- walking distance to the Port of Barcelona, the Maremagmun shopping mall, the Gothic Quarter, the trendy Born, the beach, and Las Ramblas -- it's an excellent value for a mid-range hotel. While it's a good choice for tourists and families, it doesn't offer much in the way of services for business travelers.

Hotel Astoria
Paris, 203

Clean rooms and a rooftop pool make the Astoria Hotel a solid value for tourists looking for a mid-range hotel that is nonetheless elegant. Located in the Eixample District with plenty of restaurants and shops nearby, the hotel has 117 modern (but stark) guest rooms with minibars and free Wi-Fi. An on-site restaurant with a diner atmosphere serves breakfast and lunch. As an added bonus, the hotel has a room filled with pictures and books illustrated by Catalan artist Ricard Opisso. Guests looking for a hotel in a similar price range closer to Las Ramblas and the old city should check out Hotel Hesperia Ramblas, a stylish hotel a block from Las Ramblas.
