Sensation Sagrada Familia

The three-and-a-half-pearl Sensation Sagrada Familia is located in the upscale Eixample neighborhood, around the corner from iconic Sagrada Familia. The apartments are chic and smart, with muted tones and modern technology including air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, fully equipped kitchens, and free Wi-Fi. The rooftop terrace is a highlight, with sunny and shaded loungers -- plus unrivaled views of Gaudi's masterpiece. A small outdoor pool, modern fitness center, and sauna are nice-to-have extras, but expect to pay extra for daily housekeeping. Breakfast is available (for a fee), and rates are on par with other upmarket properties in the area. Visitors looking for a livelier location might try Hotel 1989 on Las Ramblas, where rates are higher, but there's a restaurant and tapas bar on-site.

Exe Mitre

The Hotel Eurostars Mitre is a plain, three-pearl property in the largely residential Sant Gervasi District, about a 15-minute drive to the center of Barcelona. Its 57 traditionally decorated rooms have jetted tubs, some with balconies, and views that include rooftops and the surrounding streets. The hotel has a well-lit common room where a buffet breakfast is served for a fee and there are views to the street. Guests lament the lack of a bar, the absence of coffee and tea-making facilities in the rooms, and the noise from the hallways. For a similar hotel with a restaurant and a bar, compare rates with Hotel Silken Sant Gervasi.

Hotel Medicis
Castillejos 340

Hotel Medicis is a budget property located in Barcelona's residential Horta-Guinardo District, a 10-minute walk from La Sagrada Familia. This clean, modern hotel is a good choice for tourists who don't mind being outside of the city center, and for doctors working in nearby clinics and the Hospital de Sant Pau. The 29 rooms are simple and small and have flat-screen TVs, balconies, and most have mini-fridges. Breakfast is served daily for a fee, but there's no full restaurant or bar. Wi-Fi is free. A metro and bus stop are within walking distance for access to the city center in about 30 minutes. Travelers on a tight budget should also consider Feetup Garden House Hostel, although it's about an hour from the city center.

Primavera Hostel

The Primavera Hostel is a budget property well-located in the heart of the Eixample in walking distance to Gaudi's masterpieces like Sagrada Familia and a four-minute walk from the metro. While there's not a ton of extra features here, there's a nice communal kitchen and chill common spaces foster a social (though not necessarily "party") atmosphere. The property has seven guest rooms -- simple but tasteful and roomy affairs which include doubles, triples, quads, and six- and eight-bed dorms. All make use of shared bathrooms. Staff are helpful, and guests rave about the level of cleanliness in both rooms and bathrooms. Still, it doesn't hurt to comparison shop the city's many hostels; Generator Barcelona is a popular choice in the area -- a bigger property with a bar and more of a hip, party vibe.

Hilton Barcelona
Avenida Diagonal 589-591

The three-and-a-half pearl Hilton Barcelona focuses on the needs of business travelers with features like fully-equipped meeting rooms, free Wi-Fi, and an Executive Lounge. The design is ultra-contemporary, and all the basics in amenities are covered: restaurants, nice gym, room service, hot breakfast buffet, and parking (for a fee). However, there’s no pool or spa and the hotel’s a bit far from the city center, making it less than ideal for tourists. The 290 rooms are lovely and provide comforts like flat-screen TVs, minibars, and kettles. For a pool, nightclub, and spa, travelers might want to consider Melia Barcelona Sky, a business-friendly hotel on the opposite end of Avenida Diagonal in the business district of El Poblenou.

The Hipstel Paseo de Gracia

The Hipstel is a trendy two-pearl hostel with a superb location in the center of the city, close to Barcelona's top shopping and nightlife, and a five-minute walk to public transport. Its 20 rooms and dorms are bright and open, with air-conditioning and lockers, and it has a lot more character than many other hostels in the city. There's plenty of space to chill out, from the TV room to the outside terrace and dining area, and there's a kitchen with a free coffee machine, microwave, and stovetop. A buffet breakfast and a set evening meal are available and there's a program of activities -- including open mic nights. The location is hard to beat for budget travelers, but Hostal River is an alternative closer to Las Ramblas.

Aparthotel Silver
Breton de los Herreros, 26, Atb-5

Aparthotel Silver is a contemporary hotel set slightly away from Barcelona's city center on a quiet street, yet it's a short walk to many restaurants, bars, and shops. Guests comment favorably on cleanliness, friendliness of the staff, the cozy courtyard where a breakfast buffet is served, and the comfort of the rooms. Modern rooms have stocked kitchenettes, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi; therefore, the hotel is considered by many to be a good value for the price. Some rooms have small terraces with deck chairs, but on-site parking does not come cheap.

Atenea Calabria Apartaments

The 80-unit Atenea Calabria Apartaments is a mid-range property situated in a quiet area of the Eixample, near bars, restaurants, and the Rocafort Metro station. The fresh and modern studio apartments have kitchenettes, plus flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Some have bunk beds, and some offer balconies with views of the street or surrounding buildings. Although there aren't a lot of amenities here, the hotel provides a breakfast buffet, on-site parking, room service, a meeting room and business center, and a communal TV room. Keep in mind that some common areas are dated. Travelers who'd like more amenities and are willing to sacrifice apartment conveniences could check out the EuroPark Hotel, which has a fitness center, pool, and on-site bar/cafe.

NH Barcelona La Maquinista
Sao Paulo 33-37, Sant Andreu

The 92-room NH Barcelona La Maquinista is a mid-range option located next to a large shopping mall in the Sant Andreu district. It's about a 20-minute drive from Barcelona's city center and about a 10-minute walk from the closest metro station. Rooms are simple, with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and safes. A breakfast buffet is offered daily for a fee, and the restaurant serves Mediterranean fare for lunch and dinner. There's also a bar, and a self-serve bar that's open around-the-clock. Groups can gather in the private dining room or in the two meeting rooms. For travelers who don't mind the distance from the major tourist attractions, this place can be a good value. Travelers looking for a more authentic neighborhood could check out the Hotel Zenit Barcelona, which is similarly priced.

NH Collection Barcelona Podium

The NH Podium is housed in a lovely 19th-century building that blends seamlessly with its charming surroundings in the city's Eixample district. Inside, it has been thoroughly modernized, with 145 spacious rooms and suites that offer the contemporary furnishings, flat-screen TVs, and stocked minibars that are standard for the NH brand. The rooftop terrace is a major highlight, with potted plants, chic furniture, and a terraza bar that make for a pretty setting to take in the city views. Its outdoor pool, however, is a bit on the small side. Dining options include Mediterranean cuisine at the Corella restaurant and a daily breakfast buffet, though there are less expensive alternatives in the surrounding area.
