Hotel Grums

The Grums is a modern hotel in the residential neighborhood of Poble Sec, but still walking distance (10 to 15 minutes) to Las Ramblas. Featuring a wellness spa and mostly white decor that makes for a fresh vibe, the property feels a bit more like a seaside resort than a city hotel. It is fitting, seeing as the property is located at the foot of Montjuic and just a few hundred yards from the port of Barcelona, where boats leave for Mallorca and Ibiza. The Parallel Metro Station is nearby, which means convenient access to the rest of Barcelona. The 78 upscale rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and free Wi-Fi; some have terraces.

Room Mate Pau

With quirky art throughout the hotel including huge eyeball pictures in hallways and large hands painted on guest room walls, the Room Mate Pau is a cool pick for tourists visiting Barcelona and wanting to stay somewhere inspiring. The mid-range, chain hotel has 66 funky guest rooms with colorful striped carpets and sleek, white furnishings. The hotel has a breakfast buffet, and a big, outdoor terrace. It's in a convenient location -- 55 yards from Plaza Catalunya and less than a five-minute walk to the shops and restaurants on Las Ramblas. Guests give Room Mate Pau glowing reviews, but for less money, the well-liked Hotel Denit Barcelona is another popular pick in the area.

Hotel Catalonia Sagrada Familia

Equally appropriate for business or leisure travelers, the Hotel Catalonia Sagrada Familia's main selling point is its location on the busy Calle Aragon, nine blocks (about 15 minutes) from the iconic Sagrada Familia church. The breakfast (for a fee) is ample and includes Spanish omelets. The amenities highlight is the small outdoor pool. The 160 clean and contemporary rooms come with free Wi-Fi and flat-panel TVs. The hotel is a solid mid-range option for those who want to stay near the Sagrada Familia, but it's a bit far from other popular attractions. Those who want to be slightly closer to the heart of Eixample may want to consider the similarly priced Eurostars Monumental.

Room Mate Emma

With a stylish lobby reminiscent of the inside of a space station and a funky, modern diner area where breakfast is served, the Room Mate Emma is a cool pick for tourists visiting Barcelona and wanting to stay in a "design" hotel. The mid-range chain has 56 colorful guest rooms that stand out for their bold use of color and artistic touches. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby, but guests wanting to stay closer to Las Ramblas may want to consider Hotel Ramblas, a stylish, more expensive option closer to the action.

Catalonia Plaza Cataluna

The 149-room, mid-range Catalonia Plaza Cataluna is located (as the name suggests) right next to the Plaza de Catalunya, a fantastic sightseeing location at the intersection of Eixample and the Gothic Quarter. The area teems with shops, restaurants, nightlife, and people-watching opportunities, with the metro right outside for access to all of Barcelona. There is a lovely pool in the courtyard, where guests can take a breather. Once past the spectacular entranceway, the modern rooms are serviceable, but this hotel is about location, and that is ideal. The nearby -- and more upscale -- Hotel Murmuri and Hotel Pulitzer can be similarly priced, but they lack the Catalonia's on-site pool.

Hotel Catalonia Park Guell

The mid-range Catalonia Park Guell offers 141 tasteful, modern guest rooms, some with large terraces. The hotel's lounge is a bit outdated, but the rooftop terrace with its small plunge pool and panoramic views of the city feels decidedly sleek and stylish. It's located in Barcelona’s Gracia district, and the immediate area around the hotel is quiet and hilly, which may be challenging for some travelers who want to venture out on foot. Guests looking to stay closer to Barcelona’s historic Ciutat Vella can find more contemporary, similarly-priced rooms and amenities at Hotel Lleo.

H10 Urquinaona Plaza

Like most (but not all) H10 properties, there's a ton of style to like at this upscale property in Barcelona’s Eixample. The location couldn't be more central, with bars, restaurants, and some of the city’s most impressive architectural gems all within a five- to 10-minute walk. The 80 trendy, contemporary rooms come with air-conditioning, Nespresso machines, and free Wi-Fi, though some are compact. The hotel has a good number of amenities beyond the rooms, including a rooftop terrace with a small pool, cocktail bar, and great views over the city. There’s also a lobby bar and restaurant, though breakfast isn't included. Those wanting somewhere with comparable facilities plus a free breakfast should check out the nearby Hotel Barcelona Catedral, which has lower rates but less style.

Ohla Eixample

The four-pearl Ohla Eixample is a well-designed boutique hotel in the Eixample, a short walk from the metro and luxury shopping at Passeig de Gracia. Its 94 guest rooms have an on-trend, urban look, and all come with 55-inch flat-screen TVs, well-stocked minibars, kettles, and free Wi-Fi, and some boast private furnished balconies. Ohla Eixample is among the city's handful of hotels with a rooftop pool, and this property's is a standout, with a wide deck, sunbeds, and city views. Other highlights include a full-service spa, fitness center, a Michelin-starred restaurant with innovative Catalonia cuisine, and breakfast for a fee. Travelers seeking a luxury boutique property in heart of the Eixample can check out Alma Barcelona.

Hotel Medinaceli

The 78-room mid-range Hotel Medinaceli, about a five-minute walk to the sea and the lower end of Las Ramblas, is housed in the old palace of the dukes of Medinaceli. The hotel’s historic palace building is impressive in many ways, and several classic details have been preserved in the common areas, but rooms don't quite live up to this elegance, although some have Juliet balconies, and bathrooms are sleekly modern. A hot and cold breakfast buffet is included in some room rates and there's a beautiful reading room under a glass atrium. Guests might want to consider the Hotel Constanza in Eixample, which has more modern rooms and a lovely rooftop terrace and artful details throughout at a similar price point as the Medinaceli.

Hotel Jazz

Located on the vibrant Carre Pelai a short stroll from La Rambla, the Hotel Jazz reflects the energy of its surroundings in its look and feel, with stylish and colorful decor and a buzzy vibe. The contemporary rooms feature comfy beds, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. The centerpiece amenity is a rooftop, year-round outdoor swimming pool and sundeck with good city views, a cocktail bar, and a lounge. A stay here suits travelers who want a prime spot near La Rambla, in a cool, modern upper-middle-range hotel that doesn't break the bank with its nightly rates.
