Swissotel The Stamford Singapore
2 Stamford Road

At 73 stories, the upscale Swissotel The Stamford is the tallest hotel in Singapore, situated within Raffles City shopping and entertainment hub in the bustling commercial center. All upper-floor rooms have stunning views, and newly renovated rooms are smartly presented. About a dozen restaurants and bars can be found without leaving the complex, along with two outdoor swimming pools, a fitness center, spa, and tennis courts. Swisshotel The Stamford's size and facilities are impressive, but they can feel impersonal. For a little more style, the sister Fairmont Hotel, also in the Raffles City complex, trumps its bigger sibling.

V Hotel Lavender
70 Jellicoe Road

The 888-room V Hotel Lavender is an enormous upper-middle-range hotel situated above the Lavender MRT station. There's a small shopping arcade with a food court in the lower level, and the hotel has its own pizzeria, and outdoor pool. Rooms are modern but small, although many on the higher floors have good views of the city. The V Hotel Bencoolen has similarly cramped rooms, but the property is closer to downtown.

Conrad Singapore Orchard
1 Cuscaden Road The Regent Singapore

Situated between the bucolic Botanic Gardens and Orchard Road's shopping bonanza, the Conrad Singapore Orchard provides a luxurious atmosphere in a discreet location. The trade-off is that it's not as close to either destination as some of its competitors, but this luxury hotel has its own attractions including a full spa, several popular restaurants, and an expansive Sunday cocktail brunch. The 440 rooms have elegant Asian accents and well-stocked minibars, though the traditional decor may strike some as too old-fashioned. Overall, the Conrad Singapore Orchard is not quite as posh as the nearby Four Seasons, St. Regis, or Shangri-La -- but prices tend to reflect that. Rooms are not currently open to guest but will reopen to them in the first quarter of 2024

Grand Hyatt Singapore
10 Scotts Road Grand Hyatt Singapore

While most of the hotels in the popular Orchard shopping area are upscale, the Grand Hyatt Singapore stands out with its excellent restaurants with open show kitchens. Rooms are large and contemporary, and even the Standard Rooms have convenient separate work areas. Amenities include an outdoor pool, a spa, and a great fitness center. Getting to tourist attractions is easy as there are several public transportation options nearby, but travelers who aren't on a shopping trip or attending a meeting here, might consider a different part of the city altogether, depending on their interests. Those who do want to be in the Orchard Road area, however, might want to compare rates with the Singapore Marriott Hotel or Four Seasons nearby.

Wangz Hotel
231 Outram Road

In the Tiong Bahru historical district, the upscale Wangz Hotel stands alone on its own prestigious plot between Outram and Tiong Bharu Roads, but the location comes with some traffic noise. While it's not walking distance to mainstream attractions, it is in one of the hippest neighborhoods in Singapore, packed with trendy cafes and eateries. Rooms are large and modern, with work desks and big rainfall showers. However, the rates are high -- travelers who want to stay in Tiong Bahru without paying a premium should check out the Nostalgia Hotel, a cheaper property with the added bonus of a pool, but smaller rooms.

Peninsula Excelsior Hotel
5 Coleman Street

Located in the Central Business District, the three-and-half-pearl Peninsula Excelsior Hotel is a massive 600-room high-rise property. The highlight of this upper-middle-range hotel is undoubtedly its plush 22nd-floor Sky Lounge, which has panoramic city views that reach to the Singapore Flyer ferris wheel and gravity-defying Marina Bay Sands. There’s plenty to draw leisure travelers -- like two outdoor pools and a smart buffet-style restaurant -- while business travelers make the most of free smart phones and free Wi-Fi throughout. Rooms are pleasant, and include powerful air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs, but there are signs of wear and tear alongside some cleanliness issues. Leisure travelers would be wise to compare rates at the Marina Mandarin Singapore, which is closer to Marina Bay.

Village Hotel Changi by Far East Hospitality
1 Netheravon Road

A three-and-a-half pearl, chain hotel in the laid-back Changi Village, the Village Hotel Changi by Far East Hospitality is located within a 10-minute walk to the beach and a 15-minute drive to the airport. With simple and modern decor, the hotel keeps up with the Far East Hospitality brand, and 380 guest rooms feature expected amenities like free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and minibars, plus either garden or sea views. There are three on-site restaurants that serve international and local fare -- including free buffet breakfast -- and a wine bar. Additional features include two swimming pools, fitness center, spa, and seven event facilities. Apart from the modern entrance and lobby, the interiors are mostly forgettable. For somewhere closer to the airport, travelers can compare rates at Crowne Plaza Changi Airport.

Rendezvous Hotel Singapore by Far East Hospitality
9 Bras Basah Road

The 298-room Rendezvous Hotel Singapore is an upscale hotel in Singapore's central Bras Basah.Bugis heritage area, near the metro and plenty of dining and drinking. The look across the modern rooms ranges from the soft minimalism to less on-trend decor, and all include flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel is attached to the Rendezvous Gallery, which has an abundance of dining options, though the hotel also has a buffet restaurant and two bars. There's a small outdoor pool and a 24-hour fitness center as well. Wangz Hotel, an upscale boutique in the hopping Tiong Bharu neighborhood, has larger, more stylish rooms, though rates will be higher.

Novotel Singapore Clarke Quay
177A River Valley Road

Its prime location next to trendy Clarke Quay is a stand-out feature of the 403-room upper-middle-range Novotel Singapore Clarke Quay. The area is packed with bars and restaurants, and the metro is less than 10 minutes away on foot. Rooms are simple and modern, and some have outstanding views or the river, but some design elements can be tired. There are three restaurants plus two bars, including one by the large outdoor pool. Fitness and business centers are nice perks, as is the on-site laundry room. The nearby Park Hotel Clarke Quay has similar features, though rooms have a bit more personality.

Royal Plaza on Scotts
25 Scotts Rd

The 511-room Royal Plaza on Scotts is an older upscale hotel located in the heart of the action on Orchard Road, surrounded by shopping malls and dining spots. The hotel is a popular choice for the area, and while interiors look opulent on first glance, it's all a bit dated and overdone. Pleasant rooms are decorated in brown and beige, and offer free nonalcoholic minibars, flat-screen TVs, Nespresso machines, and work desks. The hotel has an buffet restaurant, as well as an outdoor pool and small fitness center. Eight event spaces can accommodate business and social gatherings, plus there's a business center. As an alternative, the Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore is a similarly priced option in the area with a spa, but some of its rooms are dated and plain.
