FH Grand Hotel Palatino

The four-pearl Palatino Grand Hotel Rome has a truly stellar location near major attractions in a hip and youthful historic district. Though there’s no pool, spa, or gym, the hotel provides a free breakfast, two restaurants, a bar, and meeting rooms. The condition of the 200 rooms varies -- some are renovated and others are not -- but all offer flat-screen TVs, minibars, and air-conditioning. However, there have been complaints of poorly functioning air-conditioning, and the Wi-Fi might be slower than expected. A decent alternative is Welcome Piram Hotel, with a wellness center that has a sauna and hot tub, a rooftop terrace, and free minibars in rooms.

Trilussa Palace Congress & Spa

Noted for catering to both vacationing couples and business travelers, the Trilussa Palace Congress & Spa in Trastevere features rooms with an understated Louis XVI-style decor and recently renovated rooms with padded headboards. The standout features of the property are the two spas, which offer a wide range of treatments for an additional charge. During the warmer months, the rooftop garden is open and houses a small cocktail bar as well. The picturesque surrounding area with its medieval architecture contains an assortment of shops and trattorias, but most popular tourist sights are not within easy walking distance.

Relais Fontana Di Trevi

For sightseers, location doesn’t get much better than at this 24-room, three-pearl hotel, situated a few steps from Trevi Fountain in Rome’s historic center. Furnishings and upholstery are more dated in some areas than others, but the place has a certain charm. While some bathrooms are a little cramped, rooms are clean and spacious compared to many small hotels in central Rome and a few have nice views of the fountain; all come with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi.

Hotel Residenza In Farnese

The 31-room Hotel Residenza in Farnese is a traditional hotel with an eclectic design in the historic center of Rome. Situated in prime location next to Palazzo Farnese, Rome’s lovely French Embassy, the three-pearl property is housed in a 15th-century building with a large rooftop terrace. Guest rooms play up the building's original architectural  details, but decor feels slightly dated and a little stuffy. Still, the overall effect is pleasant, and spaces are comfortable and well-maintained. All come with AC, small flat-screen TVs, and minibars with water, soda and sparkling wine, but there are no kettles for making tea or coffee. Breakfast, including delicious homemade jams and pastries, is free, as is Wi-Fi throughout. Travelers looking for a more upscale stay nearby can consider Hotel Campo De' Fiori.

Luxe Rose Garden Hotel Roma

The 65-room Rose Palace Hotel is on one of only a few quiet streets in Rome -- where Via Boncompagni branches off Via Veneto at the corner of the American Embassy. The upscale boutique property is within walking distance of some of Rome's best shopping and dining, as well as the Spanish Steps and Borghese Gallery. There's no extra fee for pets and the soundproofed rooms are elegant and spacious. Business travelers can take advantage of a wide array of high-tech conference rooms ranging in size from small to very large; everyone can take advantage of the spacious spa with a small indoor pool, a rare feature for a Rome hotel.

NH Collection Roma Centro

NH Collection Roma Centro is an upper-middle-range chain hotel in the convenient Prati neighborhood. The '60s era facade and tired looking rooms are a bit of a downer but the hotel has nice features and freebies, making it a solid choice for business travelers and tourists. Rooms and suites are spacious enough for European standards. Most are decked out with a flat-screen TV, minibar, and espresso machine -- but carpeting is visibly stained and the decor needs a refresh. 324 Lounge gets high marks for Italian food and wine, plus a free breakfast buffet. There are almost endless dining options within walking distance of the hotel. Conference facilities are first rate, with several meeting rooms and audiovisual equipment. A fitness center and room service are nice perks.

Hotel Adriano
Via di Pallacorda 2

The 76-room Hotel Adriano is a hip and affordable property ideally located in the heart of the historic center of Rome, within walking distance of Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, and the Spanish Steps. Rooms range from contemporary to classic, and feature solid amenities such as free Wi-Fi, minibars, AC, and smart TVs. Units in the annex building, however, are a tad plain for the price, and those on the top floor lack elevator access. A substantial, free buffet of hot and cold items is served in a lovely breakfast room, while the lobby bar is a great spot for tasting rare gins. A small gym is a rarity and great perk for Rome, as is the available on-site parking. All in all, it’s a solid pick for anyone wanting to explore the center of Rome. For something cheaper, consider Hotel Alexandra

Relais 6
Via Tolmino 6

The quaint and cozy three-pearl Relais 6 has a peaceful location far from the bustle of the city center and an interesting, historic WWII past. The 16-room boutique property is homey and welcoming, providing rooms with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and minibars (with some free soft drinks), though no in-room tea- and coffee-making facilities. The lovely courtyard is an attractive feature of the property, as is the free breakfast, rooftop terrace, small gym, and on-site WWII museum. If you can get past the removed location and the lack of a restaurant, it’s a good hotel for a decent price. Travelers may want to consider the Palatino Grand Hotel Rome which has two restaurants and a superb city center location.

Aldrovandi Villa Borghese
15 Via Ulisse Aldrovandi Roma Roma

The five-pearl Aldrovandi Villa Brogheseis is an opulent experience in a quiet, upscale residential neighborhood just outside the city center. The well-preserved 19th century building is loaded with rich period details. And its 103 rooms are spacious and offer simple yet elegant decor and marble bathrooms. The lush, relaxing garden area, new La Mer spa, and fine-dining restaurant add luxury. Free parking and free shuttle to the Spanish Steps add value. But, the neighborhood is not a good match for guests who love to walk Rome’s streets to browse shops, visit restaurants, and explore landmarks. For a more intimate luxury experience inside the historic center, travelers could consider The Inn at The Roman Forum.

San Carlo Suite
Via del Corso 112 between Piazza del Popolo & Via Condotti

The San Carlo Suite is a small upscale hotel on one of the most popular streets in central Rome. Some of its eight guest rooms directly overlook the Via del Corso, and the suites have luxurious whirlpool tubs. All units are spacious and modern, with rainfall showers and electric fireplaces, and standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, stocked mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. There's a small breakfast room and a bar with a free happy hour for guests who book directly, but no other on-site facilities. Travelers looking for a more conventional hotel experience should look into the opulent Grand Hotel Plaza down the street; rates are usually higher on average, but it has a full range of amenities, including two restaurants.
