Omni Mount Washington Resort
310 Mount Washington Hotel Rd

Set against the backdrop of the White Mountains, just off the main road, the enormous Omni Mount Washington Resort is impossible to miss. It's an ideal spot for travelers looking for an cozy experience in a historic setting. While the hotel is one of the most expensive in the White Mountains, its numerous amenities and activities, coupled with its classically decorated, upscale accommodations, make it worth the extra cost for many travelers. The resort is popular with families, couples, and large groups, and its on-site nine- and 18-hole golf courses, and proximity to local ski resorts, make it popular in winter and summer alike.

Six South St Hotel
6 South St

Six South is a modern boutique hotel in Hanover; its prime location within walking distance of all parts of the Dartmouth campus make it a popular choice among visiting parents and alumni. Modern, spacious rooms have iPod docks, large flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi (although some may not appreciate the low lighting). The common areas -- such as the lobby (complete with reading nooks and free coffee) and the small fitness center -- are sleek and contemporary as well. Some still prefer the nearby historic Hanover Inn (which underwent a major renovation), but Six South's pet-friendly policies and fresh vibe add to its appeal.

Hilton Garden Inn Portsmouth Downtown
100 High St

Almost everything about this 131-room Hilton Garden Inn is just a little bit nicer than the average three-pearl property. Located in the heart of downtown Portsmouth, with particularly tasteful and modern decor throughout its interiors, it feels like a higher-end chain hotel. Spick-and-span, spacious rooms are well-suited to both families and business travelers, and feature Keurig coffeemakers, microwaves, and free Wi-Fi. Common areas, including an indoor pool and gym along with guest self-laundry, are equally well-maintained. Rates do reflect the higher quality and prime location in downtown Portsmouth’s Market Square. Breakfast isn’t included and valet parking also comes with hefty charges. As an alternative, The Sheraton Harborside Hotel Portsmouth offers similar amenities at slightly lower prices.

Portsmouth Marriott Hotel
Southampton Road

The Portsmouth Marriott Hotel is a three-and-a-half-pearl property, well-located near Portsmouth's ferry terminals. Transit travelers join a leisure, corporate, and family crowd here, and solid function amenities make it a popular prom and wedding destination. On the tired side, but still edgy, a bar and restaurant are well-reviewed, particularly the buffet breakfasts. The 174 rooms have chain aspects, and some lack natural daylight, but they're well-equipped with ergonomic work spaces, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and AC. A leisure club with indoor pool and spa adds high-end touches, but it's prone to overcrowding. More modern, The Stattons Hotel is a good alternative, particularly for travelers seeking beach proximity.

Ale House Inn
121 Bow St

The cozy 10-room Ale House Inn -- more suited to adults than families -- is housed in a historic 130-year-old former brewery warehouse a block from downtown Portsmouth. Room decor is minimalist, hip, and chic, but there isn't much to this boutique hotel other than a small lobby and common area with free snacks. There is no on-site restaurant or bar, but the Market Square District location means shops and dining are nearby. The hotel gives free tickets to the Seacoast Rep Theater, which is located on the ground floor, and a free local beer upon arrival. Each room is equipped with a pre-loaded iPad that includes a ton of information about Portsmouth.

Hampton Inn & Suites Portsmouth Downtown
23 Portwalk Place

The mid-range Hampton Inn & Suites Portsmouth Downtown offers a convenient downtown location that’s directly across the street from the Portsmouth Harbor Events & Conference Center, accessible to downtown restaurants, and a six-minute walk to the waterfront. It’s a clean and modern hotel that features Hampton’s free hot breakfast buffet, as well as a spacious fitness center, restaurant/bar, and indoor pool. Guest laundry facilities and a 24-hour pantry are on-site. Valet parking is a bit expensive. Rooms are modern and equipped with microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Rates are competitive, but can spike in peak season. The mid-range Sheraton Harborside Hotel Portsmouth offers comparable rates and amenities, including many rooms with waterfront views.
