Uptown Palace
Via Santa Sofia 10

The Uptown Palace, an upper-middle-range property in the heart of Milan, correctly bills itself as a "business hotel," and its sleek, contemporary interiors as well as its comprehensive business center with five meeting rooms, reflect that. Spacious, modern rooms are a bit bland in terms of decor, but offer a host of amenities and generous bathrooms. In-room Wi-Fi, surprisingly, incurs an extra fee, but it's free in common areas. A breakfast buffet is included in the room rate, though many guests report that like the hotel's design, it lacks spark, and there's also a restaurant serving lunch and dinner. For another modern hotel with similar rates, travelers could try the NH Milano Machiavelli.

LaFavia Milano
Via Carlo Farini 4

The three-pearl LaFavia Four Rooms is a bed-and-breakfast-style boutique property housed in a historic renovated private residence, located just outside central Milan. Decor is elegant and on-trend, and rooms have tons of panache, with patterned wallpaper, chic furniture, and vintage accents. All have air-conditioning, armchairs, console desks, and free Wi-Fi, but no TVs. Bathrooms are on the small side but feature attractive shower tiling and heated towel racks. The two larger rooms boast private terraces and kitchenettes. Amenities are limited but guests rave about the tranquil, lush roof garden and veranda where breakfast is served, although travelers with mobility issues should note there's no elevator to the second floor. Porta Garibaldi Bed and Breakfast offers a good alternative with larger, apartment-style rooms, although it isn't quite as charming.

Belcanto B&B
Via Beato Angelico 13

Belcanto B&B is housed in an old, vibrant building and has only four rooms. Decor is fresh and airy, if simple, and all rooms have flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and modern bathrooms. A tasty breakfast of homemade croissants is provided, and there’s a pretty patio area off the breakfast room that faces a garden. The property is in a residential neighborhood somewhat outside the city center, but Central Station can be reached in a 15-minute ride on public transportation. Guests give the owner good reviews for being warm and helpful.

B&B Hotel Milano Cenisio Garibaldi
Via Messina 38

Part of a European mini-chain, the B&B Hotel Milano Cenisio Garibaldi is a 121-room, mid-range property about a half-hour metro ride north of central Milan. Very modern and big on style, the hotel has a youthful vibe and lots of color but few amenities. It’s a two-minute walk to Cenisio Metro station, which you’ll need to reach all the sights. Rooms are simple but stylish, with striking photo murals of Milan architecture. The hotel has good exterior soundproofing, though some guests still complain about noise from the popular nightclub next door, and walls between rooms are thin. In the same price range but closer to the center of town, the popular Lancaster Hotel has a more traditional style. It also includes a free breakfast, which the B&B Hotel Milano Cenisio Garibaldi doesn’t.

Starhotels E.c.ho.
Viale Andrea Doria 4

The Starhotels E.c.ho. is a 143-room upscale, eco-friendly property that's a short walk to Milan’s central railway station and the subway. Decor is stylish and modern throughout, and upgraded rooms have balconies with nice views. Breakfast is included in the rates, and the hotel has an organic Italian restaurant and indoor/outdoor bar, along with a small but well-equipped gym. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and meeting spaces are available. On the down side, standard rooms can be small, there’s no parking, and some services require fees. Travelers could also consider the nearby Hotel Mediolanum, which has lower rates.

Grand Visconti Palace
Viale Isonzo 14

Grand Visconti Palace is an upper-middle-range hotel outside of central Milan that's within a four-minute walk from the Lodi T.I.B.B. Metro station. The 172 rooms are mostly modern and spacious, with a dash of Old World elegance, but the free Wi-Fi can be painfully slow and some rooms are dated. The hotel's Italian restaurant serves all three meals, including the free breakfast buffet, and outdoor dining with gorgeous garden views is available in warmer months. There’s a fitness center on-site, and for a fee guests have access to a spa that includes the hotel's indoor pool. Guests looking for a more convenient location to explore the city may want to compare rates with Hotel Berna, an upper-middle-range property near Milan’s main train station.

STRAFhotel | a Member of Design Hotels™
Via San Raffaele 3

The 64-room, four-pearl Hotel Straf is known for its industrial-chic decor (which might not suit all tastes) and lively bar that attracts guests and locals alike. Its central location is a major draw, and some guest rooms have spectacular views of the Milan Cathedral. Though the rooms have flat-screen TVs and minibars, they’re small, stark, and lack tea/coffee facilities. Notable amenities include a small gym, a meeting room, and a restaurant that serves lunch and a free breakfast buffet in the mornings. Wi-Fi is free, but sometimes unreliable. Travelers seeking something a bit more luxurious and a quieter atmosphere might want to check out Hotel Milano Scala, which has a cozy bar and lounge as well as a stunning rooftop terrace.

Hyatt Centric Milan Centrale
Via Giovanni Battista Pirelli 20

The 141-room LaGare Hotel Milano Centrale - MGallery Collection is a sharp upscale hotel in the Sofitel brand that's located in Milan's business center, a five-minute walk from two of the city's major train stations. The historic core of the city -- home to its famous cathedral -- is only 10 minutes away by metro, as is the Quadrilatero di Moda -- its retail heart. Rooms are modern and done in masculine, moody decor, with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and minibars. On-site dining includes a restaurant and two bars, and six meeting rooms accommodate gatherings. The wellness area and fitness center are small, but nicely equipped and stylish. Travelers looking for a less-expensive option could check rates at the nearby Una Hotel Century, which offers a free continental breakfast.

Rosa Grand – Starhotels Collezione
Piazza Fontana, 3

For a handsome and modern stay in the heart of Milan, the four-pearl Starhotel Rosa Grand is a solid choice. It’s central location is the main draw, and the Duomo is only a four-minute walk away. Features are slim, which is common in central Milan, but include a basic gym and a small Turkish bath. The food and beverage program here is strong, and is run by Eataly -- the international Italian food hall chain. There are 330 rooms, and all have a sharp, contemporary look plus flat-screen TVs, minibars, and air-conditioning. Travelers seeking something more luxurious and classical should try the Four Seasons Hotel Milano. Though it’s not as close to the Duomo, it does feature a pool, spa, salon, and private gardens.

Palazzo Segreti
Via San Tomaso 8, angolo Via Dante

A chic, contemporary counterpoint to Milan's Old World hotels, the four-pearl Palazzo Segreti is a short walk to many of the city's main attractions. Its 18 rooms, which include apartments with kitchens and terraces, are modern and minimalist, with an industrial edge. All rooms come with flat-screen TVs, and some have minibars. Breakfast is included in the rates, and there's a small, snazzy wine bar for evening drinks and snacks, but design and the central location are the draw here. Travelers could also consider the equally modern Hotel Straf, which has a restaurant and gym, and minibars in all the rooms.
