Porto Azzurro
Ridott Street, Xemxija Bay

The mid-range Porto Azzurro is an affordable, homey apartment hotel with 110 One- and Two-Bedroom or Studio units located in a quiet spot overlooking Xemxija Bay. Rooms vary between plain, basic decor and upgraded, modern furnishings with a sleeker style; all have kitchens, living rooms, and a fee for Wi-Fi. Penthouses overlook Xemxija Bay from nice terraces. The quiet location is slightly isolated with few dining options -- aside from the hotel’s cozy English pub, restaurant, and bar at the outdoor pool, where there’s also a hot tub and kids' pool. The hotel also has an indoor pool, fitness center, and dive center that offers guided trips. For free Wi-Fi and a livelier location, consider the Hotel Topaz.

The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux
Misrah Il-Kunsill Citta Nobile

Part of the distinguished Relais & Chateaux collection, The Xara Palace is an upscale boutique hotel housed in a gorgeous palazzo dating from the 17th century. It's also one of just a few hotels with the privilege of being located within the medieval walls of Mdina, with parts of it set into the ancient city ramparts. No two of the 17 rooms are identical, and they're not quite as beautifully decorated as one might expect, though many feature wonderful views over the island. One of the two restaurants on-site also provides superb panoramas and excellent dining is offered in both restaurants. Overall, it's certainly a distinguished hotel in a privileged position, though for palatial luxury with spa facilities and a large pool, try the Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa.

Comino Hotel
San Niklaw Bay

The three-pearl Comino Hotel is an aging resort with private beaches, two outdoor pools, and buffet restaurants typical of a mid-range all-inclusive. It's the only hotel on the island of Comino north of Malta and its exclusivity is its main advantage. However, it's accessible only by boat, which makes it an inconvenient choice for those hoping to explore the mainland, a 30-minute water taxi ride away. The 95 guest rooms and bungalows have air-conditioning and private balconies or terraces, but they're dated and not all face the sea. Guests who want to walk to dining and attractions should compare with the Luna Holiday Complex overlooking Mellieha Bay on the main island.

Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa
De Paule Avenue

The Corinthia Palace is a luxury property set in a grand 19th-century villa with a polished, adult-oriented vibe. The location is unusual in that it's set in an upmarket, largely residential neighborhood in the dead center of the island, away from most attractions and beaches, though free shuttle service is provided. There's little reason to leave the hotel, anyhow, with excellent and varied dining options, indoor and outdoor pools, and a lovely secluded garden spa. The 152 rooms also feature minibars, flat-screen TVs, and super-fast Wi-Fi, though the old-fashioned decor isn't everyone's taste. There's also not a great deal for children, so families might prefer the Radisson Blu in Malta Golden Sands, which features a kids' club and a private beach.
