Residencial Casa Linda
Carretera El Choco, Carretera El Choco

Residencial Casa Linda is a mid-range vacation home community where privately owned villas can be rented by vacationers. Decor and in-room amenities vary, but all villas have fully equipped kitchens, private pools, and patio areas. It’s an ideal place for families or large groups, as some villas can accommodate up to 12 people. Residencial Casa Linda is in a secluded area that’s a bit hard to find from the main road. There’s nothing within walking distance, but the hotel offers a free shuttle to and from downtown Sosua and Cabarete. There is no on-site restaurant or fitness center, but the property added a communal pool and tennis courts in 2016.

Hotel Plaza Del Sol
Avenida Jose Contreras No. 25-A, Zona Universitaria

The Hotel Plaza Del Sol isn’t much to look at from the outside. However, a decent location and 28 well-appointed, apartment-style rooms — all with air-conditioning, kitchenettes, and flat-screen TVs — create a solid budget option for guests looking for a functional place to stay in downtown Santo Domingo. Aside from the tiny lobby lounge, there are no common amenities, and it can take up to 25 minutes to reach the Colonial Zone by car, depending on traffic. Fortunately, guests needn’t travel more than 10 minutes by car to find plenty of restaurants, shops, and bars. Although it’s pricier, Antiguo Hotel Europa includes free breakfast and a rooftop deck with excellent views of the city’s bustling Colonial Zone.

Be Live Collection Canoa
Playa Dominicus, Bulevar de los Hoteles

This 871-room mid-range all-inclusive resort just outside the sleepy tourist town of Dominicus Americanus caters to an army of families. There are dizzying array of options for eating, drinking, and playing -- specifically, seven restaurants, seven bars, a disco, a big main pool with a swim-up bar, and a beautiful beach. The downside to all these features is that the resort can get crowded and loud. Rooms range from slightly dated to stylish and beachy; most guests consider the VIP amenities well worth the upgrade. Those who want a quieter, mellower vacation that's still geared toward families may want to consider the Cadaques Caribe just down the road.

New Garden Hotel
C/Dr. Rosen #32, El Batey

If CBS decides to add "CSI Sosua" to its crime show franchise, producers needn’t look any further than the New Garden Hotel to shoot the show’s iconic sketchy hotel scenes. Conveniently, the network won’t even need to supply seedy props, as condoms, cigarettes, and sketchy, single men are already on hand. The 40 dank rooms, with their barred windows, moldy ceilings, and mismatched furniture, complete the look, along with two dirty pools. Playa Alicia, the gorgeous beach within walking distance of the hotel, can serve as the blissful backdrop for the opening credits. The nearby Tropix Hotel is a cleaner, safer option for families and couples, with a strict registered guests only policy.

Be Live Experience Hamaca Suites
Calle Duarte corner Caracol 1

Hamaca Suites offers 65 beautifully renovated Suites inside a sprawling mega resort of 670 rooms. The bold Suites warrant a solid four-plus pearl rating, but given guests must share tired resort facilities with everyone else, it gets a three-and-a-half-pearl status. The Suites are beautifully done with Travertine floors, playful bold color, and lovely bathrooms, but the common amenities just don’t measure up. Still, this is probably the best option in Boca Chica. Aside from chic oceanfront Pelicano (on-site but not part of the all-inclusive package), dining here is mediocre at best. Highlights include a gorgeous beach, relaxing spa, and access to five pools, including a large beachfront infinity pool. Those seeking real luxury should head to Punta Cana’s Excellence El Carmen, for stunning suites with private whirlpools and excellent all-inclusive cuisine.

Antiguo Hotel Europa
Esq. Calle Emiliano Calle Arzobispo Merino

Antiguo Hotel Europa is a basic budget property that's in the Colonial Zone, near Santo Domingo's most popular tourist restaurants and shops, and the Conde Pedestrian Mall. All 50 rooms include flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, while upgraded categories feature mini-fridges and private, city-view balconies. However, the lack of windows in some rooms, limited restaurant service (breakfast only), and steep charges for extra guests are major drawbacks. The nearby Hotel Conde de Penalba offers identical amenities, plus a full-service restaurant/bar adjacent to Parque Colon, with similar nightly rates.

Weston Suites Hotel
Av. 27 de Febrero No. 194

Weston Suites Hotel offers 94 spacious, modern rooms that are a clear step above most of the city’s other mid-range business properties. It's a central hotel, near malls along Avenida Winston Churchill, though the Colonial Zona can take up to 20 minutes to reach by cab. Rooms have polished decor plus a solid list of amenities including free Wi-Fi, beautiful bathrooms, large flat-screen cable TVs, and kitchenettes. As of late 2016, the hotel’s main common areas -- including the pool, spa, and gym -- were closed due to construction. The restaurant remains open -- with free breakfast daily -- even through heavy construction as well. Although pricier, BQ Santo Domingo by BQ Hotels offers a beautiful rooftop pool and a modern restaurant with alfresco dining.

Hotel Mango
Arismendy Valenzuela No. 2

Hotel Mango is a simple budget property in Boca Chica -- one of the island’s most famous and infamous seaside towns. The beach is less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Each of the 33 rooms is clean, though small and dated, with free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and mini-fridges. There's enough on-site to keep most guests happy, including a small pool, a tiny workout area, and a lively 24-hour restaurant and bar that’s equally as popular with guests and locals. Although it’s more expensive, Hotel Garant offers the same amenities with a bit more polish and a better location near the beach.

Coral Costa Caribe All Inclusive
Villas Del Mar Boulevard

With a 24-hour sports bar, large beach, three pools, late-night snack shack, and one of the area’s only casinos, the theme of the all-inclusive, three-pearl Coral Costa Caribe is best defined as beachfront block party. Almost everything here comes with a "but." The beach has white sand and calm water, but relentless hawkers and dated water sports equipment. The 416 guest rooms are clean and spacious, but have dull decor and some maintenance issues. Five restaurants include everything from Caribbean cuisine to a buffet to Tex-Mex, but the quality of food varies and some restaurants are closed during the week. There's Wi-Fi in the rooms, but there's a fee. Alcohol is included in the all-inclusive package, but it's low quality. The price tag and the beach are the biggest selling points at the Coral Costa Caribe Resort & Spa. For an alternative beachfront resort, check rates at the nearby Be Live Collection Hamaca.

Blue JackTar
Calle Principal Playa Dorada, Playa Dorada

While not quite a luxury hotel, the upscale, family-friendly Blue JackTar is a quiet property located on the golf course in Puerto Plata’s gated Playa Dorada complex. Although it’s an older resort, Blue JackTar has been completely refreshed and updated. Spacious rooms have a casual, beachy vibe, though none of them have beach views. The hotel’s pool is large and rarely crowded, probably because guests prefer the gorgeous daybeds on the beach. The main restaurant, Green Jack, serves an international menu with a few Dominican specialities -- and might just be the best place to have dinner in all of Playa Dorada. A beachfront restaurant, Jack's Kite and Grill, was added after our visit. As far as freebies go, there’s free parking, Wi-Fi, and daily breakfast. Travelers looking for something a bit more romantic might prefer BlueBay Villas Doradas, which is an adult-only property within Playa Dorada.
