Grand Lisboa
Avenida De Lisboa

The tallest building in Macau, the 400-room Grand Lisboa is a luxury hotel inside of Macau's most recognizable landmark, a 47-floor lotus-inspired tower that emerges from one of the largest LED domes in the world. A fittingly go-big-or-go-home style governs everything here, and the hotel has a casino, live dance shows, and a variety of dining options including three Michelin-star restaurants plus a beautiful outdoor swimming pool, a salon, and spa. Rooms are spacious and lavish, if almost over the top, and include amenities like free minibars and Hermes toiletries. Though the Grand Lisboa is easily the most iconic building in the city, travelers looking for luxury alternatives should compare rates with the Grand Hyatt Macau, which has an outdoor infinity pool in the City of Dreams development.

Grand Lapa Macau
956-1110 Avenida da Amizade

The 416-room Grand Lapa Macau is an upscale hotel within a five-minute walk of Fisherman’s Wharf, an amusement park and shopping center. Impressive features include a gorgeous outdoor pool and whirlpool, a large fitness center, and a spa with an indoor pool and sauna. There are several dining options as well as a pastry shop and a lounge. The children’s center, with games and toys, plus an outdoor playground are fine family-friendly features. Rooms are spacious with nice floor-to-ceiling windows, but decor is dated and includes tube TVs in some rooms and old carpets, and unfortunately Wi-Fi isn't free. Travelers with a slightly higher budget may want to consider the Grand Lisboa, which has opulent, modern rooms in Macau's most famous building.

Grand Hyatt Macau
City of Dreams, Estrada do Istmo

The 800-room Grand Hyatt Macau is a luxury chain hotel located in the City of Dreams, a complex of hotels, shops, restaurants, and a casino on the Cotai Strip. The hotel's grandiose design lives up to its name and includes two posh restaurants and a large lobby lounge. There’s also an outdoor infinity pool, 24-hour fitness center, and a spa offering massages and facial treatments. Rooms are bright, modern, and minimalist, and guests staying in Club Rooms have access to the exclusive Grand Club, with an attractive outdoor patio plus free breakfast and all-day refreshments. It's a bit far from most of the Macau action, though, and guests may want to compare rates with Grand Lapa Macau, a luxury property near Fisherman's Wharf.

Hotel Royal Macau
No.2-4 Estrada da Vitoria

The 380-room Royal Macau Hotel is a classy, upscale property set in the more residential side of Macau's center -- though still within walking distance of its glitzy casinos and buzzing nightlife. While it can't compete with most of Macau's resorts for facilities, there are a long heated indoor pool and two excellent restaurants on-site. Rooms updated in 2015 feature speedy free Wi-Fi and floor-to-ceiling marble bathrooms, though internal soundproofing could be better. Rates are reasonable, though there are better deals out there, such as the Harbourview Hotel Macau, which has more lavish interiors and is by the Fisherman's Wharf.

Wynn Macau
Rua Cidade de Sintra

With over 1,000 rooms, the Wynn Macau is an enormous, glitzy, luxury hotel on the Macau Peninsula near plenty of other high-end hotels and casinos. From choreographed fountain displays to the lavish, theatrical interiors, this property feels very Las Vegas, and has high-end perks like Michelin-rated dining. Rooms are big and bright, though not exactly chic, with features like huge flat-screen TVs and bathrooms with separate soaking tubs. Property highlights include an outdoor pool in a tropical garden, a luxury spa, and a total of eight on-site eateries. Despite the pizzazz, some guests may find the vibe a bit conservative -- those who prefer their luxury more fun and casual should check out the Hard Rock Hotel on the Cotai Strip.

Sofitel Macau At Ponte 16
Rua do Visconde Paco de Arcos

Set in the historic quarter of Macau, the luxury Sofitel Macau at Ponte 16 provides a bit of glitz in an authentic setting. The riverfront location means superb views from the hotel's poolside terrace, a couple of its restaurants, and most of its 408 rooms, plus the property has easy access to the city's tourist attractions. While the pool is a good size and the health and the spa facilities are above average, there's not much here for kids. Those who prefer more sanitized surroundings should check out Cotai Strip hotels -- such as Hard Rock or Crown Towers.

Hotel Okura Macau
Avenida Marginal Flor de Lotus, Cotai

Hotel Okura Macau is a luxury property with minimalist, Japanese-inspired decor, and a serene atmosphere. The hotel is housed in the multibillion-dollar Galaxy Macau complex, on the Vegas-like Cotai Strip. Guests have access to its plethora of restaurants and leisure activities, including the resort deck, with a wave pool, splash parks, and a lazy river. The property's 488 guest rooms are spacious and well-equipped, and they have impressive bathrooms that feature separate tubs with integrated TVs. There's also an on-site heated indoor infinity pool, and a Japanese restaurant with stunning views. You'd hard-pressed to find a high-end hotel with a Japanese flavor that's better than this, but travelers looking for a little more pizzazz may prefer the Galaxy Macau Hotel.

City of Dreams - The Countdown Hotel
City of Dreams, Estrada do Istmo, Cotai

Macau's outpost of the Hard Rock Hotel is a 322-room, high-end property occupying a shimmering tower in the ritzy City of Dreams casino and entertainment complex. Those hoping for the Hard Rock experience won't be disappointed, as there are plenty of music memorabilia and rock 'n' roll details throughout -- though guests expecting wild parties might not find what they're looking for. Rooms are sleek and spacious with impressive in-room tech and loaner Fender guitars. Surrounded by lounge chairs, the outdoor pool with swim-up bar is a genuine hang-out and the hotel hub. This property also has a fitness center and spa. Guests looking for even more sophistication should check out the neighboring Grand Hyatt Macau -- though rates are generally higher.

Mandarin Oriental Macau
Avenida Dr Sun Yat Sen, Nape

The 213-room Mandarin Oriental Macau is an elegant luxury hotel that's connected to the exclusive One Central Macau, a shopping mall that's home to Cartier, Tom Ford, and Louis Vuitton. This posh hotel has a chic restaurant serving Asian cuisine and cocktails, an outdoor pool with sea views, and a spa offering a variety of pampering treatments. Rooms are modern and polished, with views of Nam Van Lake or the South China Sea, and extra amenities like Nespresso coffee machines, big soaking tubs, and TVs in the bathrooms. For those who can afford it, this is one of the best luxury options in the area. Guests looking for a lower price tag may want to compare rates with Grand Hyatt Macau, a luxury property in the City of Dreams complex with an outdoor infinity pool.

Inn Hotel Macau
No.822 Estrada Governador Nobre Carvalho, Taipa

A former Best Western, the 287-room Inn Hotel Macau is a modern, mid-range property on Macau's Taipa Island. It's within a 10-minute walk of Taipa Village and Rua do Cunha, a popular touristy area of Macau where the city's Portuguese legacy is on display in its shops and restaurants. The hotel has a fresh feel throughout, including a colorful, funky restaurant, and rooms are minimalistic and sharp, with muted color schemes and sleek bathrooms. Some guests find it takes a while to hail a cab outside the hotel, but a free shuttle is provided to some key destinations in Macau. Guests may want to compare rates with Ole Tam Sam Un Hotel, a mid-range property that's closer to the picturesque Rua de Felicidade in mainland Macau.
