Best Western Plus Oceanside Palms
909 N Coast Hwy, I-5/San Diego Freeway at the Coast Hwy Exit

Best Western Plus Oceanside Palms/Camp Pendleton is a two-and-a-half-pearl property located near downtown Oceanside, about a six-minute drive from the beach. The hotel completed extensive renovations in August 2016 that included enlarging the 114 guest rooms and adding an outdoor patio space with a fire pit. Rooms feel modern and feature large flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, and some kitchenettes. Free breakfast with hot and cold items is served daily, and guests can eat outside on the patio. Other features include a nice outdoor pool and a separate hot tub, plus barbecue grills on the deck. A business center and a large meeting room are available. As an alternative, the Best Western Oceanside Inn has lower rates, but feels dated inside.

Avatar Hotel, a Joie de Vivre hotel
4200 Great America Pkwy

The 168-room Avatar Hotel is a 1960s-style motel that has undergone a fun redesign: think funky furniture, shag carpets, and glass cases of toy robots. But despite the modern furnishings with lively colors, many old problems remain, including rooms and windows opening into outdoor hallways -- which results in less privacy -- as well as cramped bathrooms. Perks here include an outdoor heated pool, bright fitness center, and the up-to-date technology expected in a Silicon Valley hotel. Wi-Fi here is free, and rooms feature flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and spacious work desks. While the Avatar Hotel attracts mostly business travelers for its central Santa Clara location, the close proximity to the Great America Theme Park is nice for families too.

Hotel Focus SFO
111 Mitchell Ave, US 101 / Bayshore Freeway at South Airport Blvd

This 117-room budget hotel minutes from SFO is a reasonable choice for travelers arriving late or departing early, and for those who have business near the airport. Unusual perks at this price point -- free airport shuttle, fitness room, electric car-charging station, attractive outdoor fire pit -- make the very reasonable prices here an even better deal, as do the 2016 renovations. Adequate rooms are generic hotel fare, with cherrywood-finish furniture, but no decor to speak of. White bathrooms, with showers over tubs, are fine but characterless; some have the sink area outside the bathroom. Those looking for a more service-oriented hotel near the airport might consider America’s Best Value Inn & Suites, which has fewer extras and is somewhat more expensive, but it's consistently well reviewed.

Best Western Plus Grosvenor Airport Hotel
380 S Airport Blvd

BEST WESTERN PLUS Grosvenor Airport Hotel is right off the freeway, convenient to businesses on this industrial side of town near San Francisco International Airport. Sports fans with cars coming to see a game can easily reach AT&T Park (and the ruins of Candlestick Park). Mid-range guest rooms have all the basics -- including flat-screen TVs with free Showtime -- as well as old-school layouts featuring flourishes of burgundy and gold. The hotel has a fitness center and pool.
