Wyndham San Diego Bayside
1355 North Harbor Drive

This upper-middle-range hotel has a great location right on North San Diego Bay, across from cruise ship terminals and an easy walk to attractions such as the USS Midway and Seaport Village. Some of the 600 pet-friendly rooms have balconies with water views, and all have coffeemakers and modern, somewhat corporate decor. Amenities include a heated outdoor pool, gym, and Ruth’s Chris Steak House attached to the hotel. The hotel looks pleasant and feels fresh, thanks to multimillion dollar renovations completed in 2014, but still is generic and unassuming, with no distinguishing style. It is priced well for an updated property by the water, and rates are generally lower than other hotels in the area.

Residence Inn Sacramento Downtown at Capitol Park
1121 15th St

This Residence Inn is a solid choice for business travelers and long-term visitors to Sacramento. It's conveniently located in downtown Sacramento and offers spacious suites with sitting areas and kitchenettes, a nice gym, free breakfast, a shallow rooftop pool with a hot tub, and an on-site restaurant with room service. Watch out on weekends, though -- noise from local dance clubs and bars can be heard late into the night, even on higher floors. The Hyatt Regency down the street might be a better choice for quiet weekend slumber.

Queen Anne Hotel
1590 Sutter St, At Octavia Street

The three-pearl Queen Anne evokes San Francisco at the turn of the 20th century, and is one of the city's most charming small historic hotels. Housed in a four-story Victoria-era building erected in 1890 and originally used as a girl's school, the Queen Anne was refurbished in 1998 but still retains its period flavor. The 48 guest rooms feature Victorian antiques, but they have been updated with such modern amenities as free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. Some have wood-burning fireplaces, microwaves, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. Breakfast and an evening social hour with tea, sherry, and cookies are included in the room rate. Located a bit far from tourist attractions, the hotel is for travelers seeking intimacy and historic charm.

Americas Best Value Inn - Dodger Stadium / Hollywood
811 N Alvarado St

The Americas Best Value Inn - Los Angeles/Hollywood is a small budget motel. While not in the nicest area of Hollywood, it is a short drive to a number of tourist attractions, such as the Kodak Theater, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Staples Center, and there are plenty of restaurants and shops in the vicinity. Rooms are a bit small, but have modern decor, making them a step above most budget accommodations. The motel has a small outdoor pool, free continental breakfast, and free Wi-Fi.

Be aware that not all rooms have private baths. The Parker Guest House is away from the bustling tourist areas but conveniently situated on the MUNI line with service to the downtown sights. Super 8 by Wyndham Los Angeles Downtown

Ramada by Wyndham Los Angeles/Downtown West
1901 W Olympic Blvd

The Ramada Los Angeles/Downtown West is a moderately priced, 130-room hotel at the edges of Koreatown and downtown Los Angeles. Rooms are clean and spacious and come with mini-fridges and microwaves -- but furniture is worn. Common areas are well-designed and comfortable and include a large lobby, an expansive breakfast area, two courtyards, and a small pool. Near the Staples Center, LA Live, and a number of restaurants, the hotel draws a mix of business and leisure customers. While there are buses nearby, the metro is not close, and the area is not ideal for walking around in at night. Plus, there's no full restaurant, and the gym is small.
