Bottom Line

Set amid office buildings, the mid-range Hotel Grand Fresa Akasaka is about a two-minute walk to the Akasaka station, and a five-minute walk to the Roppongi nightlife scene. Interiors are bright and modern, but the 136 rooms, in typical Tokyo fashion, can be a bit cramped. All rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, and include flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and electric kettles -- and some have separate living areas, kitchenettes, and balconies. The hotel's coffee shop is open all day for light meals, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Travelers could also consider the Hotel Villa Fontaine Shiodome, which has a fitness room, a business center, and includes breakfast in the room rate.

Scene

Contemporary mid-range hotel popular with tourists

Hotel Grand Fresa Akasaka occupies a modern seven-story, red-brick building set amid high-rise office buildings on a busy street. It's sleek and efficiently designed -- the lobby has beige-tile floors, dark-wood paneling, and red-accent walls. Four square black hanging lamps illuminate the reception desk and the display of a clock and metallic vases on a shelf behind it. Off in a corner is a seating area of comfy beige-upholstered sofas arranged around a table, with abstract art on the walls. A two-story atrium provides a source of natural light. Given its convenient location -- and proximity to Roppongi nightlife -- the hotel draws tourists from across the spectrum, including couples, families, solo travelers, and groups of friends vacationing together.

Rooms

Small rooms with contemporary, chain-hotel decor; mini-fridges; and electric kettles

The 136 rooms at Hotel Grand Fresa Akasaka are decorated in the same style, which is attractive if a bit predictable. Black-and-brown striped carpeting matches the dark-brown wood-grain doors and furniture. Beige Roman-style shades hang at the windows. Tomato-red bed runners, coverlets, and pillows add splashes of color that tie in with the red lacquer-topped desks, side panels, and red-and-beige striped armchairs. All rooms are air-conditioned and come with large flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, electric kettles, and mini-fridges filled daily with free bottled water. Bathrooms are small but stylish. Tiled in white and gray with large mirrors framed in red, they have shower/tub combos, round vessel sinks, and electronic toilets. Hairdryers and toiletries are provided.Room categories include Singles, Double, and Twins, all of which can sleep up to two people. Most measure a compact 150 square feet. The double beds in Standard Rooms are only 55 inches wide, which may prove a tight squeeze for two. The largest rooms are the Deluxe Doubles at 237 square feet -- these have slightly bigger beds, measuring 63 inches wide.Deluxe Double Rooms have tiny separate sitting rooms with sofas and additional flat-screen TVs. Premier Twin Rooms include loveseats, tables and chairs, and kitchenettes with sinks and microwaves. Some rooms have balconies, with views of street or neighboring buildings.
